Pikes Peak
Looks like the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb has been run and won again without much of a mention. There were no tragedies this year, thankfully, so maybe it wasn't so newsworthy.
It seemed as though entries were down this year (again ), but at least they had a title sponsor in the form of Falken Tyres. A number of drivers commented that the track was "slow," so no major records fell. The quickest time was 10:52.3 (record is 10:04). Two SCCA Pro Rally classes were added to the slate this year, and both had a reasonable number of entries. The big news (locally, anyway!) is that a local father son team (Leonard & Clint Vahsholtz) have tallied up more class wins (23) than the Unser family (22). Quite an achievement, in it's way, I guess. One thing that caught my attention was the results of the Unlimited Division: 1. Per Eklund, 11:13.2 2. Stiq Blomquist, 11:47.4 When will those guys quit??? www.ppihc.com |

Per Eklund Arvika, 2000 Saab
Stiq Blomquist, 1984 Ford Full details at www.ppihc.com Talking of Pikes Peak, I was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend and one of the cars featured was the 1994 Toyota Celica SuperSportTurbo of Rod Millen who holds the current record for the hill at 10:04.06 (and it was easy to see why as it tore up Goodwood hill) |

Ah, saw a tape of in-car camera, Ari Vatanen winning it in 1988 in the Peugeot 405 T16 and it was just orgasmic almost!

I hope the WRC can take a looks at Pikes Peak as one of the rally courses in the U.S. I hope Colin and the WRC would try this hill climb to the top.

The video onboard the Peugeot 405 T16 with Ari Vatanen is stunning - legendary. It's around the net in various forms, about 67MB, but really worth it. Stunning footage.

The Ari Vatanen in-car footage is available on VHS, it was sold by Puegeot dealers here in Australia and it is called "Climb Dance."

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. Yes I would have to agree colin, it's the best motorsport video ever made. Although, one that I believe runs a close second is a video called "In-Car Manx 1983" by Duke Video. It follows Ari Vatanen around on the first day of the event in the Rothmans Opel Manta 400. It's a video I can never get tired of because I cannot get over how hard he drives that thing in the wet. Real heart in the mouth stuff!

Thanks colin. I haven't seen that video, but I have seen "The Audi Quattro Experience", "The Vatanen Touch" and "The Vatanen Touch Too", "Henri Toivonen His Rally Days" and Tour de Corse 1985 and 86. Those videos have some great footage of group B rally cars.

PS: Anyone know how to put a link in a post so it'll show up as a picture in the message? |

gazzarallie,
The video follows Ari Vatanen around on the opening day of the 83 Manx Rally. It's 45 mins long. There's no commentary at all, just Terry Harryman reading the pace notes. 90% of the stages shown are in the wet, but this doesn't detract from the excitement at all! You have to remind yourself on occasions that he is driving in the wet! I won't say anymore cause I'll spoil it for you. A great video for tarmac rally enthusiasts. |
