Suspension Questions

Hi All. one of my winter projects is to rebuild the rear suspension on my single seater (FVee) which, due to my "Dynamic" driving style has taken quite a beating over the last two years and is now rather misaligned!
and the spring and shock are reputed to be borrowed from a very old FF.
My questions are :-
1. The car is home built and designed (not by me) and has a zero-roll setup. The rocker assembly is fabricated in Alloy (aluminium??) about 3-4mm thick. Is there any particular 'grade' of aluminium I should request when buying the alloy before I give it to whoever I get to make it? (and wheres the best place to buy it?)hrug:
2. The spring is very old I want to treat my self to a new one. How do I calculate spring rate for my particular car? (and wheres the best place to buy it?)!!hrug:
3. I'd also like to get a new rear shock. How technical should it be? How much adjustment is enough and how much is too much. (and wheres the best place to buy it?)!!! hrug: hrug:

Hope some of you can help.

Cheers,
Phil

One more question:
The pushrods are steel and i've thought about changing them to alloy, they are about 50cm long, how thick do they need to be to stop them flexing?

Cheers,
Phil

Hi I am not a qualified engineer (yet!) but the pushrods will be at risk to buckling because you are compressing a long slender member. How thick are your current pushrods?

Cheers

The push rods are currently about 15mm.

Ok are they circular or oval aerodynamic cross section. I presume the rods are hollow and if so how thick are the walls?

Cheers

imull has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Race and rally Car source book (by Alan Staniforth) and the engineer to win series of books (forget exact names) would be your best bets to start with from memory.

Springs. We have used Faulkner Springs before now (around Portsmouth area), they are in Demon Tweeks but dont buy via demon tweeks. They will also test your springs i am sure to find out what you currently have

FilW,

These are good questions, here are some in return. What do you want your new suspension to do for you that your existing does not (assuming you retuned it to perfect condition)? Does it have perceived design flaw?

What is a zero roll setup?

You have a rocker system. Where do the pushrods go? Most rocker systems act directly on the damper.

Be careful in selecting new dampers. Standard damper valving for very light cars is often wrong and you can end up with very little range of adjustment at the minimum end of the scale. Speak to the damper manufacturer about your car and get them to re-valve the shocks to suit.
