Obtaining permission to use video in a race
I want to try a bit of on board videoing when I go to Cadwell next month. Who would I have to write to for permission?

I've moved this thread, as it's not really a 'classified ad' (was in Racers' Classifieds).
Anyway, an answer of sorts: You should probably ring MSV on 01474 872331. As to speak to the press office, and then explain that you wish to run a camera in a car, for you own personal use only, at Cadwell. They'll probably want to email or fax you a form to fill in, which you must then fax back one copy to MSV, and take another signed copy with you to scrutineering on the day, to show along with your properly mounted and secured video camera. Job done |

You also may have to give a signed copy of their indemnity form back to the media centre at the circuit, instead of scruitineering/sign on depending on how confused people are.

I used one for the first time during the MSV race at Oulton Park and yes you do need a form signed and faxed back to MSV.
You then need to show the form at scrutineering and as long as they think it is safe in your car they will issue you with a passed sticker. |

Best thing is wait until the final instruction come as each circuit has a different policy.
Some require you to contact the organising club, some to contact the circuit itself, some don't seem to mind either way, but it should tell you what you need to do in the final instructions. If it's your first race with a camera aboard, then viewing it later will be quite amusing, I was suprised with the amount of swear words I knew!!!!! |

- I reckon my language during a race would consist of, "yeah, have that!", "in your fat face" (and variations thereof), "aah pee off will ya" (and stronger variations there of), "oh dear this is going to hurt" and shorter stronger variations there of, and "wheeeee!".

Don't forget to have the camera mounted before scrutteneering, you'll also need a strap of some sort as an extra securing method round the camera, mount and cage as you don't want to be wacked on the back of the bonse in the case of an accident!!
With regards the language, I'm investing in a "bleep" machine if anyone is interested in borrowing it??!! I'm also not going to show the footage to fellow competitors as I'm sure some of them wouldn't be best please with some of the "pet" names I've given them in the past!! The other funny thing when watching the race back, is the body language I've used to "try" and signal info to the pit crew (dad and brother!!) I've been asked by them whilst watching the video what I'm trying to get accross to them, but even I've had problems understanding what a waved arm here and there means!!! I'm sure I understood what I was meaning at the time!!!!! All in all though, a camera in the car is great for showing to the kids (hence the need for a "bleep" machine!!) and for refering to when you next visit the circuit. It does mean though that some of the famous racing driver excuses can't be used!!! For my next adventure, I'm going to invest in a second camera, to be positioned backwards, would be interesting to see what goes on behind as well as in front!!! |

I already have a mirror, bought from halfords, that has a smaller mirror either side of the main one, angled so that I can see all round the car.
The problem is, the rear screen on a mini is so small anyway that looking in the rear view I can just about see out the back, even with the forward facing camera mounted on the cage. If I use a rear facing camera as well, I can position it on the cage, to one side so as not to have a mirror full of that!! From watching my footage, with the extra wide mirror I currently use, you can see cars that are right up my backside anyhow, but with the closeness of mini racing, I fancy seeing exactly what people are up to behind. |
