SpeedingTortoise should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
10 Turn Challenge

Hi everyone. After going through my archive and seeing what has happened to tracks such as Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and Circuit of Wales, it has become apparent that modern tracks are quite complex in shape. This has meant that the simple, fast circuit has slowly died away been taken away from international series or been extended or "Tilke'd" and lost their original appeal.

So here are the rules to revive the simple shapes of the classic road courses such as Avus and the original Monza.

1. The track can have a maximum of 10 corners. Multi-apex corners such as Turn 8 at Istanbul will be counted as 1 turn. Curved straights such as the backstraight at Hockenheim won't be counted as a turn.

2. The track must be at least 2.5 miles / 4023m and be suitable to host Formula One.

And that's it, everything else is up to you. I look forward to seeing your designs in the next few days.

Circuit of the South

Came to post this to my own thread, but here's the far more than acceptable 3.72km Short Circuit.

Here is my first attempt, it may change/adapt.

4.1km, 10 turns, anticlockwise

Should be a suitable layout for formula 1, although I'm not sure if the FIA would appreciate the 1.5km back straight. I know there are recommendations for maximum acceleration zones although I can't remember the exact figure. If you take Spa as an example, the run from Stavelot to the new bus-stop is about 1.5km, and from La Source to Les Combes is 2km (this might be one of those classic circuit exceptions).

The proposed Baku street track has an acceleration zone of 2.2km, so maybe it's not just classic circuits.

Anyway, here is my idea, anyone else?

Not the greatest of designs but does fit the criteria...well a modern chicane with modern numbering

@AoB The track is just shy of 4km length requirement but if you extend the two straights around Turn 1 then it'll be fine. Apart from that there is a nice combination of flowing curves and the section at the top of the circuit looks quite old school. I also like Turn 3 and 4 with the fast T2 into the sweeping T3 then the surprising, tight T4.

@SKG The layout is very similar to Motorland Aragon in Spain which is one of my favourite Tilke circuits. I think the longest straight the FIA allow is 2.5km so it would be ok. I really like it, a technical, twisty first sector followed by a backstraight that would make races reminiscent of Nascar on superspeedways. Lots of overtaking opportunities around the track as well.

@SBF I really like the section from Turn 3 to T7. Three overtaking opportunities with very long straights in between that should create some epic racing. Im guessing the pit lane would be on the exterior of the track between T9 and T1. I'd possibly have it between T4 and 5. I also like the Turn 1 and 2 combination.

These are all really good contributions. I will have mine up soon.

Here is my 10 corner track. It is called Maranello after the home of a certain F1 team and all the corners are called after F1 team bases. It is just over 4km in length.

I designed that in ~5 min. a few months ago. I'll probably modify that one before making a purpose designed one. I already have an idea for such a design.

Tried to go for a faster, simpler layout.

Modified CotS

Edits in black for convenience.

Might actually be shorter, but calling it 2.5 mi. even.

This is awesome. Please turn this into a roval by adding an obvious "Turn 3" and switch the racing direction to anticlockwise so the gravel traps are in the right places for the tri-oval. Thank you for considering.

I like that. Tracks like this have been my favourites since first playing Grand Prix Circuit in the late 80s. I guess I should reprise some of my classic circuit designs here.

Was making some tracks to populate the left turns challenge thread (come on people, please), counted up the corners, counted 9's and 10's a lot.

So, those'll be up within the week.

Kharga Circuit

Hidden just outside the capital of Egypt's New Valley Governate, underwent significant changes before reaching this layout. Here is the 2.61 mi./4.21 km GP course.

Circuit de Nice

This fast circuit, set in Nice, France, may have good run-off, but filing back in after a foul up will not be easy. Both the east and west complexes present passing opportunity, but speed would decide many races. 2.53 mi/4.08 km.
