superbird,
considering you are college and doing a motorsport related course (the same as me i add) then you of all people should relise that getting into motorsport is not as easy as it seems.
The course itself is extremely benificial, enjoyable and an eye opener to the real world of motor racing.
Both Carlin and SIHE are using the course to benifit the students and prospective students who are keen on a career in motorsport.
Please refrain from posting negative comments about the course, carlin and the institute.
Instead if you have an issue, please pm me!

I think that superbird has the right to express his thoughts or opinion as much as anyone else on here. Just because you may not agree is not good enough. Carlin are not doing this for the good of their health or to waste precious time.

i totally agree, anyone can express there thoughts on anything, thats why we have different threads! fair play to carlin and at the end of the end it helps people get into motor racing and earn them some money, everyone wins.

Steve Hollman should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
This is Steve Hollman of Carlin. 'Racingdick' attended the Carlin trial course, so he has first-hand knowledge of its value to students and school leavers. But of course Superbird has the right to express his opinion - regardless of conjecture. Clearly there are less jobs available in the industry than people wanting them so it is a real struggle to beat the opposition once you finish your studies. Carlin are trying to open the industry up with this unique insight into how a team operates. As a commercial concern, we have to cover our costs, so we have to charge a fee but we are constantly searching for external funding in the form of sponsorship and government grants to subsidise the cost to students.

I'm sorry for coming across as needlessly sarky... (I am a she btw)

My basic issue is not so much the cost as Carlin aren't a charity, but I think SIHE should be organising this sort of thing as part of their motorsport courses, for both engineering AND management, not as an optional add-on. Although I think the point about it being aimed at potential students as well is a good one.

surely demand has to be managed somehow? and making it an additional extra is a reasonable way of doing so?

I'm not sure about motorsport engineering, but management at this college has a fairly small intake so demand not really the issue. I've also heard from fairly reliable sources that SIHE is one of the richest higher education colleges, however if someone has conclusive evidence to the contrary I would be happy to hear it.

I think we should do the same thing there are plenty of people on the motorsport course at Coventry that would pay that kind of money to get the eexperience.

Superbird is right it would be a nice little earner.

I think that part of the reason that it isn't part of the course may be because of insurance reasons, for some reason it can't be made a compulsory part of a university course. That's why, despite the fact that there are several universities that offer degrees in motorsport, only one of them actually races outside of Formula Student, and that's Central Lancashire (So I'm told, if anyone else has a racing team, please correct me), and this is not actually a compulsory part of the motorsport/motorsport engineering course, but an optional extra.

Perhaps SIHE are paying Carlin to do this, in the hope it will attract more students to them. Perhaps Carlin want to pick out potential future engineers. Whatever the case, fair play to them, it's a good thing.

This is Steve Hollman of Carlin. Just to clear up a few points. The SIHE do not pay Carlin nor does Carlin pay SIHE. SIHE can see the benefits to students, so they recommend the course and they helped us to formulate the content. There is no separate funding available to them to provide the course for free or even to subsidise it for its students. To be fair to SIHE, no other University or College has yet found a means to subsidise the course for its students so everyone who attends has to pay. The course is open to all institutes and school leavers - it is not an exclusive SIHE initiative. For Paul Rayner - Myerscough College run their own Formula Ford and rally car teams on a regular basis at championship level. If anyone has any detailed questions about the Insight course, you can mail me at steve@carlin.co.uk.

Also Swansea Institute will be running a car in the 750mc Locost championship. a car raced twice last year and got pole twice.
A new car is being built by students to race this year, with aim of winning the championship.

Two day option for Carlin Insight Course

Carlin are introducing an option to attend the two day factory section of
the Insight Course at a reduced cost of £250. The full course includes a
third day at the race track where participants join in with Carlin’s
official F3 testing program but where travelling or the additional expense
of the program is a limiting factor, the two day course provides a solution.

Steve Hollman of Carlin explains:

“We have had applications for the Insight Course from as far away as Japan
and I guess if you can fly in from there, then getting down to the Pembrey
circuit for the third day hardly presents a problem ! However, there have
been many requests from people who want to get the benefit of the main
course content held over two days at the factory without going to the
trouble and expense of a trip to the circuit.

The circuit day will never be on a consecutive day to the factory section as
these are not sessions stage managed for the Insight Course. Everything
about the course is based on the reality of racing and we are obliged to
attend the team’s official scheduled tests, so separate trips to the factory
and to the track will always be a feature of the full program.

Whilst participants understandably really enjoy the test days, they are very
much the icing on the cake and it is not essential to attend them in order
to gain a benefit from the course.

Another new aspect of the course recently introduced with the announcement
of our entry into the Nissan World Series, is a tour of our new Nissan
workshop.

The initial batch of applications for Carlin's Insight Course has attracted
a large number of 15 & 16 year olds - as well as confirmations from as far
away as Japan and the USA.

Course leader Steve Hollman said "The interest that we have received from
school students demonstrates the level of thought that these youngsters are
putting in to their future careers in the industry. Clearly they need to
decide whether they are going to continue their studies with further
education on a dedicated university degree course and we hope to give them
useful guidance on this and all matters relating to their future within the
industry."
