Yet another tyre question!
Pardon me, gentle forumers, if this question has been dealt with previously. I'm new here.
I'm trying to frame a set of F-1 regulations in my mind that fits with the widely held dream of bringing closer racing and more overtaking. Unlike that nice Mr. Mosley, I think that motor racing can do a bit better than overtaking primarily through pitstops! So, to tyres. How feasible is it, given current engine power and aerodynamic downforce (and both those items are very much in my list of things to examine in my future F-1 regs!), to build tyres that last the entire length of a Grand Prix? This was very much the norm back when I was a gangly youth but back then, power was far less and downforce was something only dreamt of by the brothers May. What I have in mind with this line of thought is a tyre, that as a consequence of its relatively hard compound, tends to shed fewer marbles, thereby making for a wider "line", especially in braking areas. I ran this general idea past a fellow working in a racing tyre supplier's truck whilst working in the Support Paddock at the Australian Grand Prix the year before last, and he poo-pooed the notion on the grounds that a Formula One car would inevitably destroy any tyre during the length of a GP. I guess I'm encouraged to raise the issue here having last night watched Rubens Barichello drive some two thirds of a Grand Prix distance on before changing wheels. Vanwall. If the regulations say 4 tyres allowed for the GP distance then the manufacturers will make one to last. That is the beauty of F1, if it is possible, it will be done. If it is impossible, it will be done anyway.

Maybe someone should design a tyre that picks up the marbles, thus filling the stupid grooves and giving the driver more mechanical grip!
