Bad news for Hyundai with Loix and Schwarz out - thought they might do well. Good for the championship that Gronholm's out, so it should close it up a bit. Looks like a typical first day for Petter!

Latest is that Carlos Sainz has had a puncture in SS3 and has lost some time when he had to change it.

How did Gronholm blow up his engine "within minutes" of starting the opening stage?

Harri is doing well! But too bad about Schwartz. I was hoping he'd have good fortune this time.
I still say Sainz will win. |

Problems for Tommi...
The Ford Focus' of Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz moved ahead of the opposition on the first competitive section of the second leg this morning, as Tommi Makinen lost time with a broken shock absorber on the Subaru. More at http://www.worldrallynews.com/ |

SS 6 has been cancelled due to weather conditions.
The helicopters couldn't fly because the clouds were too low. |

More drama, Makinen parked next to the road, engine off, bonnet open. He has some damage in the front.
Sainz also stopped, he's having oil problems. So it's going to be a very weird end to this Safari. Last edited by Marcel ten Caat; 13 Jul 2002 at 12:02. |

HARRI'S GOING TO WIN! HARRI'S GOING TO WIN!
Maybe ... I can't believe he's second and apparently not having any troubles yet. Tommi always drives the wheels off his car so I'm not surprised he's having problems. And when will Colin crash? He's falling behind! |

Planned for tomorrow are:
SS10 NTULELE-KEDONG 111,000 Km SS11 NAILONGILOK-IL DAMAT 82,000 Km SS12 SEYABEI-KERRERIE 80,420 Km Hopefully there will be no cancellations due to weather. Looks like that when McRae keeps the Focus running as it did the last 2 days he's going to win the Safari. Rovanpera taking 30 secs at each of the last 2 stages. If he continues to do that...he will still be 1 minute behind Colin. |

The Safari Rally is the ultimate car breaker and showed its rear ugly head. Gilles Panizzi has a close call when he swerve to avoid a collision with a van.

Alister McRae had a close call as well, he just missed a group of zebra's. Markko Martin nearly ended his rally twice, but thanks to the Focus they are still in
