IMOLA MOTOR LEGEND FESTIVAL
Masters first visit to Imola. Gives Historic racers another chance to visit a circuit in the gastronomic heart of Italy. (Peter Auto in October is the other one.)

Guess I’m the only tenther heading to Italy for this, on a very busy weekend for race meetings! I would have enjoyed VSCC Silverstone Spring Start, HSCC 5 minutes from home, Jim Clark Memorial at Hockenheim, etc, etc.....
Anyway, we’re entered in Masters Gentleman Drivers 90 minute race, on a circuit neither of us has driven before. With the SLR engine still in pieces, the ‘6hr’ Morgan +4 has been pressed into service, but it’s a fabulous car and only loses out on top speed, so I’m far from unhappy. Will be useful as a test for Spa..... Shame to be leaving the UK just as the weather is promised to be improving, but looks like Italy will be equally good, and the pizzas far superior! |

I'm going purely as a spectator (sadly...) but I'm sure there are far worse events to make a first time trip to Imola for

It's great to be corrected about being the only tenther who's going. Look forward to seeing you there, if you get a chance to say Hi!
It will be my second visit, but first actually racing. If all goes to plan will be back late October for the Peter Auto event. The place hasn't quite got the sense of history that Monza oozes, but isn't far off. The Senna memorial is a 'must do' visit, and is within the circuit itself. And all on the edge of Imola old town with some fantastic eating establishments...... Absolutely nothing not to like. Last edited by Mike Bell; 15 Apr 2018 at 16:03. Reason: Typos! |

Sounds great Mike. What better way to spend a weekend than driving round a classic circuit and eating good food!!

More than 40 cars on Mike's grid, including Simon H (Shelby Daytona). Is there any chance to find live timing somewhere? Have fun and good pizzas!

The advantage over Monza is that you can easily walk from the circuit to the old town centre, and our hotel isn’t much further away. Spotted an awesome looking ice cream parlour for tomorrow eve. (That’s for Iain’s benefit.... ) |

The only reference to timing and results regarding Imola I have found is at ingimola.perugiatiming.com .

That would be great Mike . Good luck to you and Simon this weekend ! Does the meeting carry on until Monday ? Looking at the Imola website it seemed to indicate the meeting ended on Monday .

http://www.mastershistoricracing.com...Timetable.pdf/ Possibly not totally accurate as it still seems to be still evolving, but that’s one of the joys of racing in Italy. I’ll tell you about scrutineering when get time..... |

Haa racing in Italy…*I remember when doing CER we were several Corvettes totally unable to achieve the full Monza race with only one tank of fuel. Refueling forbidden. But we could make a splash and dash protected by… vigili del fuoco! With no penalty given of course. Those people love cars and racing. |

Checking the Imola website again , there appear to be three timetables , one for the racing , one for the parades/demonstrations ( Ferrari Clienti , Ferrari XX and Motor Legends ) and a third one for various book signings in the paddock attended by the great and the good of Italian motor racing ( Ricardo Patrese , Pierluigi Martini etc ) . The dates for the book signings are Saturday 21st April and Saturday 22nd April . No wonder I got confused ....

Well, all I can say so far is that the weather is fabulous, the circuit is fantastic, the car is great, the food is superb, and the town is lovely (in an Italian way)!
Can’t wait to get on circuit again and go a bit quicker..... |

I managed two laps in qualifying before the session was red flagged. As my slowing down lap was enough to qualify me I handed over to Simon, as he only got 1.5 laps yesterday in FP! Anyway, my second lap was good enough to place us on the grid where we would expect to be, so best to let him have some more time learning.....
Of all the Italian biased displays (apart from McLaren cars ), Scudiera del Portello’s collection of Alfa’s is the most impressive for me. The pic only shows a few of them! Think the pointy-nose one is an Indy car? |

It does seem that most Quali sessions have had at least one red flag....

The black and gold single seater looks like the March 90 CA Alfa Romeo Patrick Racing ran for Roberto Guerrero at Indianapolis in 1990. This was originally the spare car which Guerrero qualified after a spectacular accident wrote off his original car , Guerrero qualifying 28th and retiring just after half distance . Unfortunately , the car didn't go as well as it looked and I think it's career ended after just one more outing .
Watching the live timing for the FIA Masters Historic Sportscars today , I was most impressed with the time set by Graham Wilson in , I believe , a Chevron B8 . While the Voyazides and Hart Lolas set front row times in the 1:49.0 bracket Wilson was just 6 seconds behind . Is this his debut in the Chevron ? |

Hi there, Graham has been campaigning his B8 for several years now & it is a very quick one, looked after by Wolfe Manufacturing. I think the qual time was set by his young hotshoe team mate, David Pittard, who paired up with Graham last season & they won the Master GD series in Graham's Elan. Pittard is EXCEEDINGLY quick in anything he drives & it would be great to see him in an F1 car & I mean a modern one !! AMG Mercedes, hope you read these pages !!
Graham has developed into a very competent racer, coming a long way since he & I did U2TC with our shared Cortina in 2009 to 2012. Not bad for a guy who STARTED racing at 56 !!! Martin Quote:

Thanks for that, Martin- they won their class in WSM in the B8.
Well it’s all done and dusted and I’m now stopped at Milan for the night. The hotel has the most camp receptionist I’ve ever seen not on telly! Had to bite my lip to stop myself from bursting out laughing.... What a fantastic weekend! Obviously good weather always helps, and we certainly had that. Hope our spectating tenthers also enjoyed the event and didn’t get too sunburnt! Our 90 minute Gentleman Drivers race had no incidents, no waved yellows and no Safety Car periods- how’s that for a rarity! Biggest excitement was a Cobra Daytona Coupe that came into the pit lane looking as if the engine got so hot it almost melted.... Gave the fire marshals something to get interested in. Thanks to some attrition and some solid driving (I only went into the gravel once...), Simon’s trusty and lovely Morgan +4 came home 11th o/a and P2 in class. After all the problems we suffered last year with the SLR engine, a thoroughly deserved result in my book. We were both well chuffed.... |

Well done, Mike !
Itay does seem tospecialised in camp receptionists . . . Last time l was at Monza, l was afraid to turn my back on the guy showing us to our rooms. Glad l was wearing slip on shoes with no chance of having a shoelace come undone .... if you get my drift ! Have a safe trip home, Mike |

Thank you for the reply Martin , it would be interesting to see how young Mr Pittard compared with Martin O'Connell in Chevron B8s .
Congratulations on your great result Mike , lets hope the trials and tribulations of the 2017 season are behind you and Simon . |
