Could Michael Schumacher win from the back of the grid in the F2002?
Okay picture this scenario:
Spa 2002. Michael Schumacher stalls from P2 on the grid at the start of the parade lap, and therefore has to start from 22nd and last. But do you think he could still win the race? Remember that his team mate Rubens Barrichello finished 2nd at Silverstone after starting from 22nd. Do you think he could? |

Maybe, Barrichello started 21st cos Alex 'DNQ' Yoong didn't make the grid

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that what happened, albiet under different circumstances in Malaysia this year?
Michael after having his front wing knocked off after a collision with JPM, (Juan's fault of course ), rejoined the race in last place and finished in 3rd. As long as we are speculating: considering in Malaysia this was the F2001 Ferrari not the F2002, and he had less time on a slower track with tyres in a severe state of wear and finished 3rd, I think he could do it at Spa in the F2002. |

No, I don't think he would win the race.
If he managed to stay in the race, I would expect him to finish in the points. With a couple of retirements from the front runners, he might even reach the podium. But if we would play this scenario 5 times, I think he would win at most 1 or 2 times. Besides, if we do this in the 2002 situation, Michael might very well be blocked by a team order... |

the question is not if he could win from the rear of the field, but could he win in an arrow's car, or bar car? That would be more interesting. The ferrari is an amazing car, once again, and with great equipment winning is easy!

He couldn't win because Rubinho would be Ferrari's priority

I think sometimes he would and sometimes he wouldn't. Probably 60:40 in favour of wouldn't.
It'd be fun to watch. |

All dependant on the track of course, if it was Monaco then the answer is obviously no!

Yes, it'd indeed be dependant on the track. If he had anything lesser than the F2002, I'd say no, because this is where I think his skill as a driver can break down. But with the pace of the current car, I'd say he could at Spa or Monza.
Not that I'm saying Michael's a bad passer, but I've seen drivers who are much better at picking off cars on the same lap. He seems to much prefer pressuring the driver in front into making a mistake. |

50/50. Depends on conditions, car set-up and state of the championship.
Plus what Rubens is doing at the front! |

No, because of team-orders. But without them, I say he can. If it rains he surely would.

Let me put it this way: if you had to select any driver who had to start from the back of the grid, and wanted him to win, and had the chance to choose any driver on the F1 circuit, who would you choose? I'd bags SchM for my car, that's for sure.

As JPM had to come from quite near the back twice in Maylasia, providing the Williams was working properly i'd pick JPM, other than that, as the Ferrari always works properly i'd pick TGF.

Yes, he would probably even win from 1 lap down.

Given Schumacher's skills, a ferrari car that is miles ahead of the competition and the ability of Brawn and company to change their race stratagy around as the circumstances present themselves, it would be possible.

Spa 1995, Schumacher started 17th or somewhere around that gridarea, with Hill not far away. A few laps later, they were leading that GP.
Starting from the back of the grid in a supercar does not have to mean the end of victory-aspirations. Last edited by NiceGuyEddie; 23 Jul 2002 at 18:24. |

I'd take Montoya, Villeneuve, Kimi, and Reubens over Michael in that sort of scenario, VB. Though Villeneuve'd have to be in position to win a championship to motivate him into doing it.
They're just better at forcing their way past. It's not Michael's style, as I said. But he gets lapped traffic to move aside, no way to mistake that red blur growing larger in your mirrors! |

He nearly won the race from the back of the grid in Japan 1998. so yes I think he could do it now no problem.
