New & improved NHIS?
12' more of track,but very little banking.Will this allow 4 a 2nd groove or just a part-time passing lane?Any comments?

I was NHIS last July & there was a lot of passing...just like @ Chicagoland last week...just not a lot of side by side racing into the corners...I think you'll see more, but not that much. The track runs a lot like Milwaukee & down the straights you can run side by side but it's best to be single file in the corners or on the bottom as you'll have the better line & be able to make the pass.

They added the 12' to the inside of the turns, I doubt that it will help at all.

I do believe it'll help some, but got to agree with Lars that it'll probably only be a marginal advantage over the previous 14 races there. Last edited by 24thunder; 20 Jul 2002 at 04:50. |

Man, I'm not sure why so many ppl don't like NHIS. I guess actually going to see a race there, I've formed a different opinion. I think it's a great track to watch a race at & we were only sitting between turn 3 & 4 in row 8. Would have been even better had we had better seats. The traffic in & out sucked, but I've been to worse...The Brickyard comes to mind. We saw a good race there too. Gordon was leading most of it, but near the end Ricky Rudd was leading & DJ got him a little loose & passed him and won it.

Great track and great fans at NHIS, however, they should contact the people at the Cadillac Grand Prix in Wash, DC and get info on track paving. Drivers in the ALMS, Trans Am, and World Challenge this past weekend all raved about how well the "grip" was on the new track and they loved it.
Jeff Gordon even wanted them to call-off the race at NHIS due to the poor track conditions. Ask Tony Stewart his opinion about the track conditions! |

Notice how the only guys that were whining about the track were the ones that finished 29th & 39th? Didn't hear a peep out of the guys in the top 10.

With so many drivers having trouble as soon as they'd get a little out of the race groove,& get into the"marbles",that the track is a hazard of sorts & even NHIS management is gonna talk to some of the drivers abt the racing surface there!Hope they do something b4 the Cup guys/gal go back there, but I doubt it!

Come on Lars, NHIS is a great track. However, it needs work done so that the drivers can rip around it without worrying about getting in the marbles.

Ward Burton and Robby Gordon both finished top 10 and both said the track was a mess... and a bunch of guys who would've finished top 10 didn't because of the conditions (not that that is an excuse for them, I just understand their frustration...)
Personally, I think it's still a race weekend, so cope with the conditions and get the best finish you can. I also think NHIS should fix it though, it is not a problem drivers SHOULD have to deal with. NHIS is a good track, overall. |

Mugs...I know NHIS is a great track. I even said that about 6 posts up in this thread. I never did hear Ward's & Robby's comments though because I only saw the beginning of the race and caught the rest on the radio. But in all my newsletters, all I read about was the #24 & #20. So that's where my comments came from.
It seems that whenever a change is made at a track, no matter which track, all the 'stars' of Nascar that have problems pizz & moan about the track. I remember DJ crying about Milwaukee after they repaved it in 1996. Every time there is a new track to...all you here is whining about only one groove...well duh! it's a new track. Can't remember which track it was the that put sealer down this year...Martinsville or Richmond maybe? But that's all we got to listen to on the pre-race & post race reports from all the guys about how bad the track was. I guess my point is, what if the track owners didn't try to improve the tracks? The asphalt would start to rip up & make the driving conditions 10 times worse. I'm glad we haven't heard it here yet, but at other boards I heard people complaining that they should take NHIS off the schedule. Huh? If your driver would have won the race, would you be making those comments? I don't think so. Hell, one of my drivers should have that race but cut a tire with 10 laps to go. Probably ran over some debris from Dale Jr.'s caution because Jr. was too impatient and wrecked himself & Todd Bodine a few laps before that. It just gets old hearing the same thing over & over again. Last edited by Lars; 24 Jul 2002 at 13:03. |
