Round 9: Rev Group Grand Prix at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. June 18-20.
Round 9: Rev Group Grand Prix at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. June 18-20.
With all the talk of driver substitutions for this year's race and the race weekend starting tomorrow, it's time to get the race thread started. Last year, because of races being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some venues held double-headers in order to bring the 2020 calendar up to a 17 race schedule. The REV Group Grand Prix presented by AMR Doubleheader was such an event, with races held on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 of July. This year's Rev Group Grand Prix reverts back to a single race event. In 2016, after an eight year hiatus, the Kohler Grand Prix was the first major AOWR event to be held at Road America since the Champ Car Generac Grand Prix of Road America on August 12, 2007, which was won by Sébastien Bourdais, driving for Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing, in a Panoz DP-01-Cosworth XFE. Up until then and with the exception of 2005, when the race was dropped due to sponsorship issues, it was a perennial event on the CART/Champ Car calendar from 1982-2007. Héctor Rebaque won the inaugural Road America 200 on September 11, 1982, for Forsythe Racing in a March 82C-Ford Cosworth DFX. With the unification of Champ Car and the IRL in 2008, the race was dropped from the calendar. The very first race to be held at Elkhart Lake was in 1950. It was organized by the Chicago Region and Milwaukee Region of The Sports Car Club of America. It was the first of three races from 1950-1952, which were held on courses layed out on public roads. However, after a fatal accident at Watkins Glen in 1952, it was decided to discontinue motor racing on all public roads and the event was moved to a private, purpose built road course. The track's history began, when highway engineer Clif Tufte, got together with the Chicago Region of the Sports Car Club of America, as well as local citizens, to develop and build a permanent racecourse. In October 1954, Road America, Inc. was formed with members of the Chicago Region SCCA largely financing the project, which had an estimated cost of $175,000, through the sale of shares. In April 1955 a bulldozer broke ground and on September 10, 1955, Road America held its first SCCA national race weekend. Since then, the track has hosted many major American motorsport's series, including the American Le Mans Series, CART, NASCAR and the United States Road Racing Championship. The track itself has undergone a number of upgrades, including the installation of gravel traps and the enlargement of run-off areas, particularly at Turn 1 and the removal of the bridge at Turn 13, at the end of 2006 season. Despite this, the actual layout has hardly changed, apart from a chicane that was installed for AMA motorcycle competitors at The Kink. Original track layout: Current track layout: Length: 4.048 miles (6.515 km) Turns: 14 Lap record: Dario Franchitti, August 19, 2000. 1:39.866, 145.924 mph (234.84 km/h). I love this track so much, and since Indycars started back there have been some exciting races. Lots of places to overtake, and fuel strategy could playout big depending on the caution schedule.
Oh and to spice it up even more......there is a change of RAIN on Sunday! |

It does seem to be the track that gets the best races, Indy, IMSA and ALL of the big historic series

Applies to this race in a way. Like father like son, JMags replaced PT with an injury and KMags replaced Felix. Both with injuries to the driver on track. Jan's second drive was at Road America, first race was Mid-Ohio

Grosjean topped today's practice, but Askew won with the interview. Also Ware wasn't last!

Interesting to see how many set their quickest times on lap 3-5. Ware, likely the most inexperienced driver in the field was quickest on his fourth lap. Hunter-Reay turned his quick time on his third lap and sat at the top of the list until Grosjean went quicker in the last minute of the session - likely on a fresh set of tires.

Qualifying result:
Newgarden on Pole, a little slower than the time he got for Pole in last year's Race 1. Overall a much better result for Penske, with three drivers in the Fast Six. A good result for Jack Harvey in 3rd. Ro Gro just missed out in 7th. Kevin Magnusson and Cody Ware make their IndyCar debuts, qualifying in 21st and 25th. |

Josef has been getting closer and closer, I think he might run away with this one.

Since we like to poke fun at the commercial interruptions of televised racing here, it is good to know the announcers get sick of it too. Yes it was a different race, but funny still!

Looking forward to this one. Will have to watch it on delay due to afternoon activities.
It appears that weather could be a factor in the latter part of this race so it could get really interesting! |

A clean start and a good start for Jack Harvey, who is up to second.

The announcers just said the best way to judge Magnussen performance today is to wait until the end of the race and see where he stands. Thanks I wouldn't have thought I'd that......

It is his race, even with a caution I think he has the pace.
I'm having terrible correlation between the on-screen leaderboard and the timing and scoring on the IndyCar website. At times they don't agree, and one is correct, but at other times neither one is correct compared to the order of cars I'm seeing on track! |

OWard nearly lost it all in T5 but loses only one position.
That caution could have helped his tire strategy though, as he needs to make these reds last longer than anyone else |
