Ecclestone proposes breakaway championship

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/spo...cle4083986.ece

Big news from Montreal. If Ferrari is 'on board' with Ecclestone, the break away might have good chance to succeed.

But I think it won't happen. It's just putting some pressure on Mosley to resign, isn't it?

Well, the Concorde agreement sprang from the FISA/FOCA war http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FISA-FOCA_war and it was orchestrated by Bernie and Max. This bit from the wiki is interesting. It was known as the world's fastest Formula ford race.

I suppose ethical standards are different in Italy, but the vote to keep Max was democratic and must be upheld. A breakaway would be destructive for the sport, destriuctive for Bernie's legacy, and destructive for Ferrari's reputation.

No coincidence that the new Concorde agreement is being discussed at the moment then

Now if Bernie and the major teams start setting up a breakaway championship, those teams might attract customer teams to run in the official FIA championship ;-) For example, if say McLaren and Red Bull Racing run in the CVC/SLEC championship, they could have customer teams in the competing FIA world championship, like ProDrive and Toro Rosso. That would make the FIA Formula 1 World Championship much cheaper. And the big money big manufacturer series of CVC/SLEC could run in the far East and middle East, whereas Max's series (if he gets enough new teams in, willing to buy chassis and engines, maybe even Cosworth engines) could run on those circuits that have problems in acquiring money to pay Bernie's starting fee.
So they need to come up with a timetable that doesn't overlap too much, and new teams and circuits could come to the "official" series.
This is wild new opportunities galore instead of autocorso with 16 cars. ;-)

That would stop when one of the two series go to an incompatible set of technical regulations.

I doubt this is more than a political tool.

I think you're right. It's an interesting proposition, but right now I think people just want rid of Mosley, and they're hoping that the threat of the FIA losing the jewel in its crown will force his hand. But then again, Mosley isn't exactly showing that he cares about the long-term welfare of the FIA, so he might just dig his heels in even more.

The benefits of a breakaway series have been aptly demonstrated over in North America, where the once great and frankly unbeatable CART became a pathetic shell of a series and died a slow and horribly embarrassing death.

This is all just posturing and nothing will happen, except for the odd political barb being thrown about the place.

Boring indeed.

F1 is practically more popular than ever? At least since Hamilton came on board anyway.
Forum punters are always talking about its death, but for some reason they can't stop watching..

A bit extreme perhaps. They have done a lot of bad things, but they have also brought a lot to the sport as well.

In Max's case the good things long ago stopped, but nevertheless...

So, if you are not satisfied with the democratic election results of your country, you should not be allowed to emigrate? The FIA is free to keep Mosley, just as the member organizations are free to leave if not satisfied. Nothing unethical about that.

Very well said Satorian.

If the members of the FIA are not happy with it's governance, then they have they should and do have the right to leave.

Bernie has denied discussing a breakaway series. This means an announcement is imminent.

With "my day" being? I don't disagree that F1 probably never was more successful than in the last few years (though I disagree that Hamilton makes much of difference worldwide). But denying that there is a very real danger of peaking (or already having peaked) - that is a rosey colored glasses view.
