No fire training at BARC training day
To all intending to incident training at Thruxton on 21st Feb.
There will for the second year running no fire training (except for trainees) upgrade signatures will NOT be signed for incident/ Obs Karen Coddington is complaining our plight at BARC. Rumour is there may be fire training at Thruxton two day meets later in the year.. But if like me you are only a BARC member and don’t do many two day meets for family reasons esp down south... your stuffed... I had hoped to do fire training on sat (last sig needed for incident upgrade) and flags on sun... but now looks like I’ll have go Rockingham on the Sun (if BMMC let a non member attend) and miss all flag training this year... No major changes to flagging regs this year is there... Thanks to ten tenths and assiociated sites I have some idea whats going on... I’m normally a supportter of BARC but this a disgrace |

Unless I am mistaken, Instructors are licenced by the MSA and therefore should be able to give you a signature for your training irrelevent to which club you belong! |

Mark (ch, not mark observer!)
If you're in Derby, can't you do the Donington training on Sunday instead? Contact Bill Butler for details (PM me if you want them). It's BMMC but it makes no odds, all welcome. Alan |

At a guess lack of training funds to buy petrol / wrecked vehicles / extinguishant. Common complaint from the clubs if I remember correctly.

It's an active airfield... but not on racedays!

The gist of it was that only a fire tray will be used for novices/trainees fire appliance familiarisation rather than a full blown car fire exercise. |

Is Castle Combe a suitable alternative for those affected?

Mark I am going to Donington training day on sunday like Sheila M says I am sure you will be welcome if there is space left for the fire training. Best to check with Bill Butler first though. Maybe its time that you joined the BMMC if you are not happy with BARC. You will also note that I am also from Derby so if you need a lift on Sunday then send me a pm.

Has anyone actually got an upto date reason or is it all specualation and guesses. I think if you have a concern over this then speak to them direct before putting things on this site.

BARC fire extinguishers have a reputation of not working when really needed .. This would have been a good chance to get those that do, refilled... and those that didn't work.. dealt with !

I'm off to Rock on Sun. Don't do Donny... (except for 750MC)
Paul, Mr Orange enjoy your Training, the BARC session tend to be second to none esp if their lay on the mad karters, mock major incident scenerios etc.. Ordinarily I'd see you at Thruxton but really want to be graded incident pre season start.. Thanks everyone else for the input |

MY MY MY I can see which side of the fence most of you are on!!
The reasons for no Fire training at Thruxton is as previously stated that it is an active Airfield, and secondly the villagers dont like breathing in fumes from burning cars too often, these people have been trying to close Thruxton since it opened if you read the BARC book about the circuit. I enjoy dual membership of BARC and BMMC and at the end of the day - as stated - we are all marshals together. Rant over - thank you. Pete. |

Pete [Digger],
We are all marshals together, and the BARC is just as active in training it's marshals as is the BMMC, but you can't train incident marshals and IOs fully unless you give the opportunity for practical fire training (it may be the only fire we see all season). True, Thruxton has it's problem with the airfield, but if BARC can't organise practical fire training there (IE car shell fires), they should only do flag / observer / off-circuit training, and novice training with tray fires. Most of the marshals here don't have any problem with BARC, and many (including myself) have done the Thruxton training day, or gone through the BARC training & grading scheme. This thread is just about not being able to get proper incident training as required, not having a go at BARC. And Thruxton isn't alone in having unhappy neighbours. Other circuits have just as bad local residents, but it doesn't stop them fire training once a year. |

I think if you look back through this thread you will find that Mark said that Fire training will be held at Thruxton during the season but that it wasn't convenient for him. The issue is not if there is fire training run by BARC at Thruxton but when it is run!

Digger, my original post was to warn to people expecting fire training to alert them to make other arrangements if needed.
I'm BARC though and though and have no problems with BARC. I normally travel 160 miles each way (for last 3 years) just to do thruxton training as i think it's that good... but yes when i originally posted was extremely annoyed at the lack of fire training. |

For those who weren't at the training day, the full reasons for not giving fire training were explained. The nub of it is that when the circuit is a live airfield, the only areas that can be used are the outfield (i.e circuit areas), but the locals along with various environmental concerns have prevented this. The circuit are constructing a fire training area down by post 12, but as this is at the end of one of the runways it can only be used during racedays as the airfield is closed then anyway. I agree that it maybe isn't an ideal solution for those who are far away, but I suppose it's better than nothing.

Just to add to cynics note, I have been advised that there will probably be FOUR opportunities to do BARC fire training at Thruxton. These will be during the church hour break, for groups of up to 20 people, and a list will be compiled at sign-on for those interested.
Therefore it looks like there will be plenty of opportunities during the year to do fire training, and generally when it's a lot warmer outside!!!!!! |
