V8 aero change

V8 supercars always seem to have troble with debris etc. clogging their radiator vent. should they revise it, something more like this:

Now taht would be thinking...but given the idea has come from another manufacturer & series I doubt AVESCO will embrace it

Funny, we used to see the Brock Mobil VP and the Seton PJ EB Group A cars with tape over the outer vents all the time.... I always wondered why, and then have wondered why since 94-95, they haven't done so...

mixxer has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
they used to tape over the outside vents on some tracks only, it was to help generate heat in the front brakes. Aero kits are submitted by the manufacturers then TEGA signs off on them as far as I know AVESCO has nothing to do with it.

Senna- the side intakes are brakes ducts- carbon tubes that curve around behind the wheel to get air onto the brake discs... no big drama if it clogs.
The centre vent is- I think- for the engine radiator. If that blocks, the engine overheats and... bad things happen.
Sometimes it is good to heat up your brakes- optimum temperature or what have you for sprint races, qualifying.

Pete55, leaves lie on the track surface, and the V8sc front splitter (flat protruding bit) effectively scoops leaves into the radiator duct. What I am proposing is a radiator duct higher off the ground, one that would not take in as much leaf/plasstic bad etc debris.

Dunno... there must be a good reason.

It seems so stupid to damage an expensive engine with something that seems easy to fix.

I think that would affect aero - look at the angle the ford/holden splitters have on the flat bit on the bottom - effectively a front wing.

But, I can see alot of positives - less broken engines, less aero - WOOHOO!

the m3 gtr appears to have it's brake ducts taped over, too.

I think i know why, have a look at the thick, heavy jacket the crewman is wearing. Racing brake pads don't work when they are cold.

The Canberra race was alwys pretty bad for leaves in the intake grilles but then the ambient temp was usually so cold it made not much difference at all.

I still cannot believe that Skaife's car made it at Bathurst in '02 with those plastic bags blocking the intake. Fairly amazing really.

The fix seems fairly simple - go to the hardware store, buy a metre or so of flyscreen mesh and run it across the radiator or even over the intakes. Leaves hit a flat surface and are blown away to the sides or drop off when the car stops.
Or are V8 Supertaxis too high tech for that?

I understand that teams cannot alter the aero of the cars. Only things like gurney flap and wing angle adjusments are permitted.

I don't think a team would be allowed to trial mesh without the blessing of avesco.

Can't they just string wire from top to bottom or even across the opening to stop debris getting into the intake.
Also i'm not convinced you wouldn't get as much debris into the intake, especially if you are following other cars which are flicking it up in the air.

i remember seeing one solution that i think team dynamik had for last years bathurst. It had 2 or 3 evenly spaced vertical wires strung out across the front main intake so that if a plastic bag was collected it would fold flat, minimising the area of coverage.

so yea, looks like its already been done before? or have new avesco regulations come in since last year?

Two or three vertically-spaced wires might grab a plastic bag but they won't stop leaves and grass and the like. I'll stick with the flywire mesh idea.
