The first two rounds of the 2011 Championship took place on 10th April –
on what may well have been the warmest April race day in the 35+ year history of Knockhill Circuit. Twenty-six competitors, several in new cars, provided great entertainment for a large crowd. Last season’s leading drivers continued their dominance of the top places, Andrew Smith (Morgan +8) winning both races, from John Marshall (Escort RS1600) and Stan Bernard (Porsche 911). Marshall briefly led race one but was beaten by 0.2 seconds at the finish. Of particular note were the performances of Barry Riddell (Triumph TR8), fifth in race one, having started from the rear of the grid, and a similar effort by Matthew Gordon (TVR 3000) in race two. Fierce competition was evident throughout the entire field and promises to intensify as additional drivers join later in the season. The next two rounds are on 30th April / 1st May. 1st May
Two action-packed races continued the fine start to the 2011 Scottish Classic Sports and Saloon Championship. Bright dry conditions were ideal for competitive lap times, with several competitors close to or below their personal best at the Knockhill Circuit. Reigning Champion, John Marshall, Brayon Classic Engineering Escort RS1600, won both races, each with a margin of around five seconds from Stan Bernard, Porsche 911. Coming ever closer to the front was Raymond Boyd, Porsche 911, third on both occasions. Jimmy Crow, Escort RS2000, and Matthew Gordon, TVR 3000, again impressed amongst the top six finishers. Further back, intense battles provided a great spectacle for the crowd. Notably, competition between the Ford Escorts of Ian Longford and Kieron Bailey, and perhaps best of all, three Alfauds, at times a few inches apart – driven by Colin Beveridge, Ian Daltrey and Roger Motherwell. The next two rounds are at Cadwell Park on 4th & 5th June. 4th & 5th June
Twenty-one drivers attended the annual ‘away rounds’ of the Championship, again held at Cadwell Park. Andrew Smith (Morgan +8) continued his seemingly unbeatable form, securing the best practice time, almost one second ahead of John Marshall (Ford Escort). Smith progressed to relatively easy victories in both races, followed each time by Marshall and Stan Bernard (Porsche 911). New class records were set by Smith, Marshall and Nic Boyes (Mini Cooper). Roy Smith (Capri Perana) made his first appearance of the season, finishing fifth and fourth in races one and two respectively. Some competitors were less successful, particularly in race two, which had only fourteen finishers. |

2nd & 3rd July
Stan Bernard (Porsche 911) led practice on 2nd July, followed closely by Willie Robertson (Datsun 240Z). A further twenty-two drivers enjoyed dry, sunny conditions, which have been a feature of Knockhill events this year. Race one winner was John Marshall (Ford Escort), heading Bernard by four seconds, with Robertson less than a second further behind. Marshall and Bernard repeated their positions in race two, followed by Shonny Paterson (Triumph TR8) closing rapidly in third place. Highly competitive driving was evident throughout both races – several cars were less than a second apart at the finish. Eight rounds into this year’s Championship, a total of thirty-seven drivers have competed, emphasising the strength of support which has developed in recent years. The next event is at Knockhill on 31st July, which has the added attraction of a thirty lap non-championship race. 31st July
The largest entry of 2011 – thirty-eight cars, gathered at Knockhill for rounds nine and ten. Competitors were split into two groups : classes A&B and classes C&D. John Marshall (Ford Escort) maintained his 100% run of Class B wins, coming first in both Class A&B races. His brother, Robert, came second on both occasions, heading Derek Hastings (Caterham 7) in race one and Jimmy Crow (Ford Escort) in race two. Nic Boyes (Mini Cooper) was leading Class A driver on both occasions. Harry Simpson (Davrian) had been the leading Class A driver in practice, but suffered engine failure during race one. His exit resulted in an oil spillage which caused difficulty for many , particularly Jim Grant (Lotus Elan) , who narrowly avoided damage when he slewed off the track. The races for Classes C&D resulted in the expected victories for Andrew Smith (Morgan + 8). Stan Bernard (Porsche 911) came second each time, with Raymond Boyd (Porsche 911) third in race one and Shonny Paterson (Triumph TR8) third in the second race. Paterson had a spin in race one and was struck by Matthew Gordon (TVR3000M). Further down the field, close battles prevailed, particularly between Mike Connon (Lotus Sunbeam) David Gray (TVR Tuscan) and Steven Cumming (Porsche 911). A thirty lap non-championship race at the end of the day attracted fifteen entrants. Sadly, only seven cars finished, headed by John and Robert Marshall. Second place went to Jimmy Crow and Tom Wilson, with Grant Allan driving solo to third position. The action continues at Knockhill on 14th August. Have I somehow missed this before? Anyway, thanks for the posts, Malcolm and for the updates. Some very nice cars in the series by the look of it, and I look forward to more reports. Perhaps you could persuade some of the drivers to sign up here and contribute; they'd be very welcome.

The problem with the Scottish Classics is that they allow just about anything and any mod so they don't comply with other series regs. There is a BDG engined Mk1 Escort that reputedly cost well over £100K, Harry Simpson's Davrian and others. While it does get some good support, people with genuine historics have to head south to race.

John, I hadn't managed to post updates for a couple of months, hopefully they will be more frequent in future. I'll mention to some of the drivers that their contributions would be appreciated. |

Whist I am not a competitor, or an official, I have heard of instances where changes have been enforced; spoiler removal, fuel injection replaced by carburettors, and over-width wheel rims replaced by a narrower version. Also, all cars must have a current MOT certificate. Many of the SC cars are eligible for, and do attend races run by other series. This year, and in the past, SC competitors have entered CSCC, HSCC and Masters events. The reputed >£100K cost of a Ford Escort is surely a matter for that car’s owner. Other drivers compete in cars which may have a tenth of that value, or less, but they enjoy themselves and don’t see the expenditure of others as a barrier to their own participation. I’m sure that people with ‘genuine historics’ are welcome to join them. |

Nice report and pics Malcolm! The little Sunbeam Lotus looks paricularly neat and unadorned. I am presuming the Capri is 'Perana spec' rather than an original SA car? Hats off to Roy Smith for racing it if it is an original, and apologies if I have insulted his car!
I went back to last year's thread to look through the cars racing in 2010, and came across this comment in one post, 29th July of that year- "Quite a few "dodgy" cars though. A "modern" Morgan V8 and a Mk1 Escort with a BDG engine, that reputedly cost over £100k to build being the worst example. Sadly the lack of keeping to the technical regs is driving folk with genuine historic cars away." Out of curiosity, has there been any shift in type & number of cars being raced, Malcolm, or is mix the same? |

This year's cars are very similar to those which competed last year. There are three newcomers in Mini, Porsche 911 and MGB respectively. The most popular cars are : Ford Escort (5), MG Midget/Austin Healey Sprite (4), Porsche 911 (4) , Alfasud (3), Triumph TR8 (3). With regard to the reputed > £100K Escort, I've attached a few photos (the engine photo is from last year - I think it now has fuel injection) . Looks a nice car to me. |

Is the David Scott 924 a 924 Turbo? I know that he used to have a N/A version. As for the relative costs of the cars, just from looking at the photos & from chatting to a few owners last year at the British GT meeting, the Mini, the 924 & the Alfas certainly are not £100K cars - they are very much nicely prepared but typical club racers cars without anything too exotic going on.

From memory, the competitiors list which I saw at the start of season did state : David Scott 924 Turbo. It doesn't mention 'Turbo' on time sheets. |

Just watched this on TV today - looks like a decent series with a nice selection of cars and some good racing throughout the field.
Don't know what the regs stipulate, but there's definitely quite a few cars there with non-original bodywork mods. Maybe the regs allow this? The TR8's all appear to have flared rear arches, and of course the Escorts have 'works' style arches that weren't generally available on road cars (not mk 2's anyway), plus there seems to be quite a few non-standard spoilers and such-like. As stated, I don't know if the regs specifically allow this, or if it's just not that strictly enforced, but either way it would prevent many of these cars from racing with the likes of the CSCC or the CTCRC. |

14th August
Twenty drivers contested two races, both of which ended in victories for Stan Bernard (Porsche 911). This maintained his position at the head of the overall championship. His closest rival, John Marshall, suffered engine failure at the end of practice and was unable to start either race. This would prove to be decisive at the end of the season. Harry Simpson entertained the crowd in a guest drive of Willie Robertson’s Datsun 240Z, coming second in race one. He achieved fastest lap in race two, but failed to finish due to gearbox problems. Alasdair Coates joined the championship in a Jensen Healey, previously campaigned by Bob Trotter in the HSCC 70’s Road Sports series. 3rd & 4th September The attraction of large crowds brought twenty-nine cars to the grid of two non-championship races, held during the BTCC weekend. Barry Riddell (TR8) had his first victory, in race one, and finished second to Andy Smith (Morgan +8) in the second outing. Sadly, there was considerable damage to the cars of Ian Morton and Liz Swan, the result of being struck by the fast-starting Caterham of Derek Hastings which began race two at the back of the grid. National TV exposure provided an excellent platform to promote Scottish Classic racing to spectators and future competitors. 10th September Perhaps inevitably, the concentration of events during the previous six weeks meant that fewer competitors than normal entered this meeting. Damp conditions prevailed during practice and race one, however they improved for the second race. Close battles were evident, especially between Robin Benn (Capri) and Tim Reid’s Marcos. The Gilmour Austin A30, making its’ first appearance, added to the already diverse range of machinery. John Marshall returned to his winning routine, followed closely by Stan Bernard in each race. Class A was won by George Leitch (Mini Ogle) and Roger Motherwell (Alfasud) in races one and two respectively. Willy Toye’s TR8 maintained a period of fine reliability as top Class D entry. 9th October Twenty-five starters at the final Championship event was very respectable, considering the long season - associated costs - and mechanical maladies which had befallen some potential entrants. Stan Bernard had almost guaranteed the overall championship before the start of racing – he only needed to finish race one. He did so in style, as runner-up to John Marshall. Andy Smith won race two with Marshall and Bernard second and third. The highly competitive action throughout was very satisfying for on-lookers – I’m sure it was similarly rewarding for drivers. Donald Laird (Lotus Elan) led Tim Reid (Marcos) by 0.1 seconds at the end of race one, followed by Richard Merrell (Alfa Giulia GT) merely 0.6 seconds adrift ! Laird had a similarly close end to race two, only 0.2 seconds behind the TVR3000M of Matthew Gordon. Final Championship positions : Class C & overall Stan Bernard (Porsche 911) Class A Roger Motherwell (Alfasud Sprint) Class B John Marshall (Ford Escort) Class D Andy Smith (Morgan +8) Photos #73 Andy Smith #68 Roger Motherwell #1 John Marshall #4 Stan Bernard #15 Donald Laird #46 Robin Benn , #14 Tim Reid Scottish Classics will also appear in two races on 30th October, organised by The Knockhill Motor Sports Club. |

John, thank you for your kind words.
One final instalment before winter hibernation …… there were two races for Scottish Classics on 30th October, at a non-championship Knockhill Motor Sports Club (KMSC) race meeting. This event was run as a trial, in preparation for KMSC organising a “Classic Speed Fair” in 2012. Twenty-three entrants enjoyed un-seasonally fine weather, especially Andy Smith, who continued his dominant form by winning both races. Newcomers included Thomas Dailey (Morgan 4/4); Ross Marshall, driving his father’s Ford Escort; and Steve Uphill (Alfasud Sprint). 2012 has the potential to be as good – if not a better year than 2011 – for the enthusiastic group of drivers in their diverse range of machinery. Photographs #77 Tommy Gilmartin (Ford Capri) leads # 1 Ross Marshall (Ford Escort) #11 Ian Morton (MG Midget) ahead of #49 Raymond Boyd (Porsche 911) #52 Thomas Dailey (Morgan 4/4) and #33 Cameron Gilmour (Austin A30) #69 Steve Uphill (Alfasud Sprint) #32 Alasdair Coates (Jensen Healey) #5 Olly Ross (Lotus Europa) , #30 Mike Connon (Lotus Sunbeam), #21 Jimmy Crow (Ford Escort) |

Malcolm, thanks again. I'm much taken with the yellow A30. What's it specced to and how tweaked is the Lotus Sunbeam, another favourite of mine?

John,
The A30 has a number of modifications; 1275cc engine, disc brakes, 13" wheels. It has only attended a few events - I'm sure it will be quicker next season as it is tweaked. The Lotus Sunbeam remains relatively standard; still on 13" wheels, albeit a little wider than factory-fitment; it has full interior trim; only bodywork modification is period 'tarmac'wheel arch extensions. It is for sale - let me know if you want more details ! |
