Bubble Boat beats Bump Day

A nice bit of rain spolit bump day, just when it was getting interesting!

Andretti had another go and improved his time.

Arie Luyendyk
Alex Barron (R)
Shigeaki Hattori (R)
Dario Franchitti (R)
Paul Tracy
Airton Dare
Greg Ray
George Mack (R)
Mark Dismore

all got in.

Oriol Servia the only person to actually attempt a bubbel run on Boat. Waived off after 2 laps, with a speed that would have done it!

But Boat's done it again!

Oriol had to stop his run due to a fuel pressure problem.

Yeah, too bad for Oriol. He was around 226.6 when they waved it off. Kite didn't make The Show, either.

Andretti withdrew his already-qualified machine and improved his time with the backup. But his starting position dropped from 23rd to 25th because of the lack of bumps!

well, position isn't much in the end, unless there's a big pileup that gets half of the field in the opening lap.

I was very glad to see George Mack make the field. 310 racing is small, but very dedicated. They have worked hard all month, but still appeared to be in over their heads. The Ganassi crew was able to help with some pointers in setting up the G-Force chassis, and Mack stayed very smooth during his qualifying run.

I never thought that Mack would have made it in before Sunday. He has very limited experience (he went from go-karts straight to the IRL)but a lot of heart and determination. Sometimes that still pays off....

I'm so disappointed for Servia and Walker Racing!

They had a time going that would have got them in, but for an inopportune fuel pressure problem. Does this guy have any luck!!??

Bump day works by the fact that there have already been 33 successful qual attempts.

On Bump day, each driver tries to make the field by going faster than the slowest qualifier, (irrespective of the day qualified)

Except this year only 24 cars had made successful previous qualifying attempts.

The Indy rules can be quite confusing to a lot of us . It took me a few years to fully understand what actually happened during the month of May

There is a thread over in the Fed Ex Champ Car Forum called "How does Indy Bump day work?" that explains the rules.

Qualifying rules are really simple:

3 Days of qualifying. You line up according to which day you qualified.

Fastest guy on the first day get the Pole. All others from that day line up behind him.

Second day qualifiers line up behind first day qualifiers. Even if ALL of the second day qualifiers are faster than the first day qualifiers, and even if they are all faster than the Pole Sitter, they still line up behind them.

Third day qualifiers line up behind second day qualifiers. The third day is usually when bumping another car out begins.

Once the field is full, to bump an already qualified car, you only have to go faster than the slowest car in the entire field - the car on the "bubble". Your position depends on your speed reletive to the other 3rd day qualifiers.

IF your speed is the slowest of the field, then YOU are on the bubble.

The only car that can't be bumped is the Pole Sitter.

Simple, and usually makes for a lot of drama on Bubble Day, with sometimes 20 or more cars getting their turn on the bubble! Unfortunately this year it was cut short by rain.

Qualiying USED to sometimes bring out 150 thousand fans on pole day, especially if it looked like a new track record could be set, 100 thousand on the second day, and 100+ thousand on Bubble Day - more paid attendance EACH DAY than almost all other races in the world could boast on race day!

But now, even with a lot of CART driver back, it could barely muster 15 thousand on Pole Day.

Thanks, TG.

Actually there is no provision in the rules that keeps the pole-sitter from being bumped. In theorey (although highly unlikely) if 32 cars bumped in on bump day and were all faster that the pole-sitter, then said pole-sitter would be "on the bubble" being the slowest car in the field. One more car qualifies and the pole sitter is bumped.

The rule states that when the field is full at 33 cars, the slowest qualifier, regardless of its position in the provisional lineup, is always "on the bubble"
