Lydden 10th September
It is only three weeks until the annual Lydden festival of motorsport. The line up of races includes (in the morning) Track and Race saloons, Mazda Max5s and the MG owners club races. In the afternnon the action moves to the oval where there will be races for the Camso V8s, hot rods, super rods, rallycross stock hatches, minicross, ministox, super saloons etc. It will be a busy day but hopefully we can get through it all. Like last year there will be two signing on forms, one for the MSA part of the meeting and one for the oval racing council. Both forms will be available prior to the start and it is essential that marshals wishing to stay for the whole day sign both. There will be a BBQ at the close of play.
We do have posters available advertising the event, if anybody can display them send me a PM. On behalf of the BARC south east, thanks again for your support. Anybody wishing to volunteer, who hasn't already made contact please, phone Chris Bird 01622 745104. |

Just a quick update. We now have over 200 cars booked in to race. T&R saloons have 29, MGs have 18, Mazdas 24. In the afternoon there are 12 Camso V8s (an American driver is taking part in one), 36 junior Ministox, 24 hot rods, 19 super rods etc etc. I know some of you have already volunteered (thank you), but all are welcome. There will be a lunch break, although it may be only 30 or 40 minutes. As ever this is a busy meeting, but the emphasis is on entertainment. In case you cannot get through to Chris Bird (who has been on holiday this week) you can contact Andy Ratcliffe on 07980 919340.

What a shame its on Saturday It also clashes with the MGCC meeting at Brands on the same day. Could be stretched to cover both meetings?

I do wish 750MC every success for the weekend (I'm a fan of theirs myself), but I hope some of the lads and lasses might choose to join us at Lydden for what promises, for those with a catholic taste in motorsport, something rather different. What did Rod say? - over 200 cars!!

Forgot to mention, there will be a free BBQ at the end of the day and some well earned drinks. Quite a lot of European drivers are coming over, mainly from Belgium and Holland, but also France and Germany. The Camso V8s even have an American driver, Bruce Andrews. The rallycross stock hatch vs. hot rod challenge is looking better by the day, and we now have a total of 241 drivers.
Hopefully there will be a preview on Meridian television during the local news programme on Friday, just after 6pm. |

A big thank you to everyone who helped make it a super successful meeting. Chezzay good job at signing on, and all the marshals worked superbly to get through 37 YES 37 races by just after 5.30. It stayed dry (well for most of you!) and all the drivers had a great time.

I was at Lydden Hill for the first time in any capacity, and spectated from the exit of Hairy Hill hairpin for the morning races and the back straight for the oval. It's a great track, and I'm sure I'll marshal there next year.
I watched a bizarre incident in one race that raised quite a few interesting marshalling 'issues'. I am absolutely NOT criticising the marshals who dealt with the incident! The incident was on lap 1 or 2 (I think) at the hairpin. A Golf had a BIG mechanical failure resulting in foot high flames coming out of his bonnet. The driver bailed out with the car in neutral. The marshals approached the car to put out the flames - but the car had started to roll backwards, picking up speed. The marshals tried to stop the car, and the driver dived across the drivers seat to try and put handbrake on. The marshals could not stop the car and the driver fell out of the car - nearly getting run over by the car. The car then rolled away down the hill, still on fire. It rolled across the track into the tyres, almost stopped then rolled back down across the track, impacting hard backwards into a tyrewall . Driver is stood at the apex of the hairpin, absolutely fine. Marshals running down the hill for the car, one stayed with driver (I think). Rescue unit is scrambled and attends to the carfire first. My points are: 1. Remembering/dealing with working on a slope/hill. 2. Keeping hold of driver after initial incident. 3. The rescue unit attended to the car not the driver in the first place (NOT a criticism, they could certainly have been told/seen the driver was ok). I would welcome any 'inside' views on this one! |

You must be referring to the yellow VW Golf driven by Craig Inskip in the T&R race. It happened on lap one of the main race.

I had a great morning! Thank you for asking me to do it! It was a shame that I couldn't stay to see all of the oval races but Brands and Silverstone were calling...3 circuits in one day...I must be mad!
