2007 Samsung 500 @ Texas NEXTEL Cup Event Thread *SPOILERS*
After giving the Car of Tomorrow a trial by fire on the short tracks of Bristol and Martinsville, as well as taking a break over Easter, it's now time for the NEXTEL Cup Series to head over to the Great American Speedway; Texas Motor Speedway.
The 2006 event saw both Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart mounting impressive charges through the field to the front after starting at the back, but in the end they had to settle for second and third respectively after Kasey Kahne - on started from the pole - held on with ease to grab the victory. It was his second victory of the 2006 season after also winning at Atlanta. Nine cautions, including a red flag after Greg Biffle smacked the wall so hard the SAFER barrier had to be repaired, slowed the race, while there were 22 lead changes among 12 different drivers. Jimmie Johnson left Texas as the points leader ahead of Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne (my my what a difference a year makes eh?) and Tony Stewart. Track Specs: 1.5-mile oval, 24 degrees of banking in the turns, 5 degrees of banking on the straightaways. Roughly 155,000 grandstand seats. NEXTEL Cup Qualifying Record: 196.235 mph, by Brian Vickers on November 3rd, 2006. NEXTEL Cup Race Record: 151.055 mph (3 hours, 19 minutes, 0 seconds) set by Carl Edwards on November 6th, 2005. Texas is one of only three tracks Jeff Gordon has yet to win a race at. He also has yet to win a race at Phoenix or Homestead. There are 50 cars going for 43 spots. NASCAR.com has the entry list. Jayski has listed Kevin Lepage as well, but as of yet he hasn't been added to the entry list posted by NASCAR.com. Scott Wimmer will be looking at qualifying for his first race of the season, as will Kevin Lepage if he indeed does try to qualify. Mark Martin returns to the #01 US Army Chevrolet. This is the second race of the 2007 season where this years' owners points determines who is locked into the top 35 in qualifying. David Reutimann, Ward Burton, Scott Riggs, Paul Menard, Ken Schrader, Dave Blaney, Scott Wimmer, Kevin Lepage, Jeremy Mayfield, John Andretti, Mike Bliss, Michael Waltrip, Kenny Wallace, Brian Vickers and A.J. Allmendinger will all have to qualify on speed to get into the race. Dale Jarrett has a Champions' Provisional available and get into the race regardless of how he does in qualifying. This is not a race using the Car of Tomorrow. TV: Pre-race show on FOX starts at 1:30pm ET, April 15th. Green flag is scheduled for 2:10pm ET. In Scandinavia the TV broadcast gets underway at 19:30 CET on Viasat Sport 3. My pick for the win: Denny Hamlin Last edited by rustyfan; 10 Apr 2007 at 13:47. |

Great stuff as ever rustyfan!
I've missed Cup, although it's only been gone a weekend! Nice to have Mark Martin back as well! Tony Stewart will win. |

A Hendrick car will win. Or a Roush one.
I'd like to see Dale back up. |

It'd be hard to say that Geoffrey Gordonson wouldn't be in with a shot, but I think that the new Geoffrey Gordonson, Jimmieson Johnsonson is looking unbeatable still...
...Then again, we're also overdue for annother Kenseth win... |

Well, there was some severe weather and quali was cancelled. Hopefully, the weather will brighten up by tomorrow...
So obviously the starting lineup is set by owner points, and jeff is on pole. Great news for Michael Waltrip! He looked like he could squeak into the race possibly here, but not now. |

That, if I'm not mistaken, was a B-52 doing the flyover. Pretty damn massive.

Ragan, Rudd, Yeley and others involved.
Ragan pushed up into Yeley and started it. Rudd's car climbed up on top of Ragan! |

Major damage to the front of the #6 after the assault by Rudd.
Oh yeah, and if Montoya can keep it clean and get a decent finish in this race he should take over the lead in the rookie of the year standings now. |

Phew, McMurray and Kurt Busch came awfully close to making a mess of things there.
