Re the Class D Novas, IIRC, Lanfranchi's was his regular Monorep prodsaloon. Kaye's at the GP meeting might have been a full Group A Nova. Kaye raced a Nova in prodsaloons, but I dont recall whether Containerships were his regular sponsor or not- they did sponsor a 2-car Vauxhall rally team, running a Group A Astra GT/E (Tony Saddington) and Nova (Chris Birkbeck) with distinctive registration numbers. If Containerships weren't his regular prodsaloon entrant, could Kaye have been using Birkbeck's rally Nova? |

OK, so I knew we had Stuart Cole and Chris Creswell, but can you fill in the Christian names for the others? I can guess a few going down the list- I'm pretty sure several of them were fairly well-known FF1600 faces of the period: Rick Shortle? Peter Rogers? (I suspect the other Rogers further down the list might be his sister Lucy, who as I recall also raced Formula Ford at the time? |

Looking back at post 98, it's probably because I'd quoted Jesper's earlier post and added my information to that. Might be a case of copying and pasting the original text from post 98 into a new post.... |

First off, here's a link to the official BTCC page and their point standings for 1986:
http://www.btcc.net/html/history_sta...p?season_id=29 Some random thoughts about the season then. Points seems to have been distributed according to the 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 scale for top-6 positions regardless of competitors in the class. There was also no dropped scores – all rounds counted. The second round at Thruxton must have been quite a freekish race, looking at the results. Mike Newman in the 635 beeting Andy Rouse for overall honours, while Rob Kirby won class B first time out with the brand new Alfa 75 V6. Changing weather conditions or the notorious abbrasive surface of the circuit? Class A: David Brodie won the final round, but is missing from the point standings – for not being registrated? He does figure as a ”ghost” as Pete Hall and Mike Newman, who finished second and third in class, only received 6 and 4 points for their achiements – and their total points tally match the official BTCC version. Andy Rouse retiring in a third of the races. David Sears mixing it nicely with the bunch of Rover V8s at the Brands Hatch GP support race. Sears did race a similar car in the Japanese series at the time for the private SARD team. Jeff Allam and Jean-Louis Schlesser finished 1-2 at the Brands Hatch GP support race scoring 9 and 6 points, but listed with 10 and 7 respectively – did they share fastest lap or is the point standing slightly off. Class B: No Graham Goode Nissan Bluebird Turbo this year, although the car would appear with a new owner in 1987. So what did Goode do in 1986? Mark Hales had a rotten start to the season with four straight retirements in the Terry Drury Escort. Class C: Barry Sheene was another ”ghost rider” receiving no points for his forth in class C at the Silverstone finals. Either Sheene or some one involved with the CHMS Clausthaler was telling the story in the Autosport series of ”Race of my life”. For some reason both Sheene and Chris Hodgetts started last 10 seconds after the rest of the grid was send off. Can't remember the reason for this, but will have a look for the story. The Brands Hatch Racing school Escorts don't seem to have been competing for class C points at the Brands Hatch round 7 race. XR3i winner Stuart Cole would have been third in class, according to Carrera's list, but those 4 points seems to have gone to Tony Crudgington, who otherwise seems to have ended way out of the points. Argetsinger could be American Mike Argetsinger. He raced in British F3 at some stage during the 1980s anyway. Class D: Tony Lanfranchi received a maximum score of 10 points unopposed twice during the season. Another productive day about to end. Thank you KA and Carrera for your contributions and knowledge. Let your fingers flow, while I'll prepare something about the 1987 season. This is the only season for the 1983-1990 period where I have a complete set of Autosports to lean against, but more about that in due time. Jesper |

If it was the Containerships Group A rally Nova that Kaye used at the GP meeting, rather than his own prodsaloon, then this could be the car in question (seen here with Chris Birkbeck on the Manx Rally) http://www.flickr.com/photos/howiend...l-1273065@N23/ All we need now is a pic of Kaye at the GP.... |

As with the other 80's years i've separated them out from Craig's original BTCC thread into individual years for ease of reading/adding etc...

Couple of thoughts/questions.
The TWR Rovers fairly demolished the field at the Brands GP supporter. I can't remember the race details but Rouse retired, so had he been challenging them prior to going out? I mentioned something about the big class quality in 1985, in that Walkinshaw's brands win may, or may not have been aided by the lesser competition than in 1984 for example. 1986 was again short on numbers and Rouse generally had little competition in the big class. However the '86 TWR Rovers would have been bang up to date as raced in Europe, so sould have been formidable indeed. I had forgotten that David Sears ran the Celica Supra at that GP round, I thought he had been out in a second Rouse Sierra. This clearly proved that in the right hands this car was still a competitive machine. Shame we didn't see a regular Hughes entry after the Sheene dissappointments of the previous year. Separate point entirely and if my memory serves me correctly, whilst we didn't see a Commodore until 1987, I think there were moves afoot to try and encourage the MSA to remove the upper class capacity limit in order to allow a rumoured Allan Grice Holden entry for certain rounds as well as possibly an ex TWR Jaguar XJS entry to re envigorate the quality of the entry in the top class, at least. It didn't happen but I'm sure it was discussed in the comics that off season? |

Barry Sheene never really made it on four wheels, did he? Around 1989 or 1990 he among others tested the Peter Brock RS500s in anticipation of the late season endurance races of Australia, only to crash the car. Brock found another driver for the seat. Jesper |

The depth of competition in the big class wasn't brilliant in '86, if you bear in mind that only Rouse, Pete Hall and Mike Newman ran a full season- Dennis Leech and Mike O'Brien both missed two or three rounds, and no-one else made more than a couple of appearances Quote:

'Another idea to get the thumbs down was a restructuring of the capacity limits to open up the top group to an unlimited capacity from 3600cc in a manner similar to that seen in the ETC. It was known that if such a move occurred, Allan Grice would try to undertake a few events with his Holden Commodore. Sadly the move was not made in time for the start of the season, and the Holden stayed on the TCC trail' |

Also, about Sheene's Sierra crash, there are a couple of things to note. Firstly, it was icy-cold (it was at Winton in the middle of June for crying out loud!) and a bit damp, very tricky conditions to drive any car, nevermind for your first time in the fire-breathing RS500 Sierra. Secondly, the driver that was chosen - Mark Larkham, then battling Russell Ingall for the local Formula Ford championship - crashed the other Mobil car in his next test at Oran Park! |

Sheene's comments on the post-Thruxton replacement car certinly ring true from what I remember reading in some of the race reports- a random example, from Autosport's qualifying report for the Brands European GP support: 'And where was Barry Sheene? There are probably more succinct ways of putting it, but decorum dictates that he was in trouble. The Hughes of Beaconsfield team were trying out a brand new engine management system and it just did not work, and to compound the problem, the second session saw dire vibrations and a lowly eighth place, just ahead of the leading Alfa Romeo of Jon Dooley' The weekend wouldn't get any better: 'Finally the cars reached the grid- or some of them- gone already was Barry Sheene, his Supra fumbling to a stop at Graham Hill Bend on the warm-up lap. The end of another unhappy chapter for the team. Barry did not hang around to pass comment, jumped on his motorbike and headed for home' Last edited by KA; 25 Jan 2010 at 07:38. |

Just noticed Peter Lovett's name as driver of the Hughes Supra at the opening round?
Didn't remember that one?! He may have been evaluating the car for the season, or put in to help 'advertise' it perhaps? Either way it was the first time we'd seen him in the BTCC since his removal from the Sanyo TWR Rover team midway through 1984 IIRC? |

The car next appeared at the GP meeting for David Sears (3rd behind the TWR Rovers), and then Lovett and Bob Meacham drove it at the TT, with Vodafone sponsorship, but didn't start after shunting it in qualifying http://homepage.mac.com/frank_de_jon...lverstone.html |

Could you put up your little boxes of round info as per 1985 and I'll see what else I have.
