They had there version of the Can-Am but with less displacement. The 4 cam Repco engines in their largest form were raced there.
It was Elfin, Mclaren and other local builds that were raced. Fans were more into Trans-Am style racing there (i.e. Bathhurst plus the other prod. based series, in which most cars were unique to Australia that raced) so it never really had much of a chance. |

Australia had some good sports racers. eg
Argo (Chevy), Boral (Ford),Elfin (Chevy), and Starcevich (Ford).Matich were SR3 (Repco Brabham V8) SR4 and SR5 (Ford 2L). A couple of Lola T70's raced also. Argo was based on a Wrecked Cooper Formula chassis. Boral was built by Eric Board, it had an Elfin 360 body. Starcevitch a 1 off Ford mated to a VW Kombi gearbox with a Matich SR3 body. I for sure love Can Am race cars. I had an enjoyable day at Road America in 2001 seeing Jim Halls Chaparral and the McKee's etc. Yes I'd say Aussie loved Can Am. Don't forget the Rennmax which finished second in the Championship in 1974, I believe.
The Starcevich was officially called the Graduate and there either werer two of them or one car in two versions. While the Can-Am was a Porsche or Shadow runaway, the Austaralian Sports Car Championship had competition. Pete Geohagen died awhile back, he was one of the greats of Australian sports car racing, all varieties. Bob |

Another was the Mildren Maserati driven by Ralph Sach and Frank Gardner around 1964-5-1966. It was at Philip Island 2004 as the Renmax Traco. When it left Mildrens it was fitted with a Traco Olds, IIRC.
Another big banger was Lionel Ayers MRC (Motor Racing Components) fitted with a v8. and a couple of replicar Lotus 23's all built by Bob Brittian of Renmax. Your right on the Starcevich cars. The 2nd 1 had a McLaren M8 style body. Cold up you way ? Last edited by mickj; 25 Mar 2004 at 05:50. |

---Cold up you way ? ---
Mostly wet and humid now. I have been wearing a vest and T-shirt all week. I wish we would get some genuine cold winters. |
