morrisnutter should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Non destructive testing

I have an engine component which I need testing before fitting. I have a sneaky suspicion that it has been welded and then ground- if it has then I don't want to fit it.

Can anyone recommend someplace that they have used? I have done a quick search on here and looked in the suppliers section of the Blue Book, but there's nothing obvious.

Cheers,

Paul

Short of having it X ray-ed it could be difficult. I used to get Crankshafts X ray tested years ago but "back door" at an aircraft firm ! Although "this part "may been ground you might be able to see the structure through a serious magnifying glass (you will be surprised ) and see the change. The spray on test kits also may show up an imperfection .

PS I use a magnifying lens out of an old photographic enlarger.

Magnetic particle will show any cracks, don't know that Ultrasonic will do a lot for you, so will probably be down to x-ray. Should be able to tell if there's any foreign material in there then.

We send a lot of parts for xray from work as we manufacture a lot of welded parts for the aerospace industry. Were abouts in the UK are you, as if your local I can at least point you to a few companies. Magnetic Partical will obviously only work on certain materials or there is FPI (Dye pen inspection) however this will only realy show if there are cracks.
Like I say if you let me know were abouts you are in the UK ill see if I can find somewere you can drop it in.
