Mac Ross - Mini Racer
Hello !
I'm currently researching a certain Mac Ross for a magazine article as I have a number of excellent photographs of him racing. Mac raced Minis from around 1964 in both club and BSCC events and went on to Mini Se7ens until the early 70's. He ran a speed shop in London "Ross Racing" and I hear he was located in Chiswick ? His Minis usually if not always ran with his registration 'BMR 10' on the bonnet, I also hear his first name was Brian, hence Brian Mac Ross. In some of the colour photos from 1965 his Cooper S is gold coloured with a black roof with the front panel also painted black. I have photos and mention of him in Mini Se7en's club magazine but other than this I know absolutely nothing more. There has been a suggestion of him being related to the Ross Foods family also. Here's a pic of him facing the wrong way at Silverstone... http://www.coteriepress.com/site/COT...id=10638&cc=GB The question is can anybody help with any more information on Mac or does anyone know anyone on the late 60's saloon racing scene that would ? Any help gratefully appreciated. Thanks Pete |

Hi, I have looked through an extensive list of programmes from when I first started in the game, until I retired in the late seventies. The only "ROSS" that I can find was firstly a DAVID ROSS who was in a meeting I competed in at Mallory Park on September 13th 1970. But he was driving a Formula Vee. ( Oliver Wooler Vee?). The other was in a yellow & green MINI. His name is down as: TERRY ROSS. That was on October 4th 1970 at Silverstone.
Sorry I can't be of any further help. Of course, I do not have a record of EVERY race, so hopefully someone else will have better news for you. Gerry. |

As a bright eyed youthful spectator I can confirm that Mac Ross was a regular competitor at Brands Hatch in the early/mid sixties, but more than that I do not know. Good luck

Remember him racing 1.0 mini in bscc ( now btcc ) in 1971, if you have results from that year he should be there.

The name rang a bell, so today found a spare moment to look through my old results sheets. Sure enough, found that we competed together in 1973 in Production Saloons - both using 1275GT Minis. For some reason, he didn't appear in 1974.
Also found that he used the 1275GT Mini in one Group One race at Snetterton in September 1972, when I was using my Austin (Mini) Cooper. Could always beat him when it was wet, but he thrashed me in the dry. Brought back some memories seeing all those names (including a certain Rod Birley in an Imp!!!) |

Thanks for all the replies. I've since found a piece in Motoring News about him from 1967. His son ran his 'Ross Racing' speed shop in Kilburn in London it transpires, his tow car at one time was an Austin 1300 with BMR1 on the number plate, his full name was Bryan Macdean Ross. He was chairman of the British Club Drivers Association and ran another kind of club altogether called 'The Starting Grid' in Paddington. He was often seen racing at Mallory and Brands. His peers ,apart from you Tim would have been the likes of Ian Mitchell, Phil Derbyshire, Mike Kearon, etc in club races but as I say often popped up on the grid at BSCC rounds in 970's or 1275's..
Here he is on the outside in a quite tatty BMR10 in about 1970...... |

I have the results from a race at Silverstone on 26th September 1969. Mac Ross is shown as a non starter though he did practice and was 5th fastest in class in a special saloon race.
