1987 Australian Group A Touring Car Races - Discussion & Results
Moving on to 1987. Plenty of races to cover. The Shell Ultra-Hi Australian Touring Car Championship, 2-litre championship, AMSCAR and the various one-off races, this year including the endurance races, as there were no championship for those races.
Sources: Australian Motor Racing Year 1987/88 Bathurst 1987 - book and DVD Autosport A bit of Motor Race Timing material before that site went off line http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1987_Au...ing_Car_season I used to have plenty of VHS material from the ATCC, but still have plenty of notes from this source. As usual entry lists and official results would be very welcome. Jesper |

15/2/1987 - Castrol Clash - Oran Park South Circuit, NSW
Castrol Clash
Oran Park South Circuit, NSW (15/2/1987) Circuit Length: 1.96 km Race Distance: 25 laps Weather: Rain clearing Oran Park was celebrating its 25th anniversary, and on the programme was the first Group A race for 1987 in Australia. A 25-lapper on the original short-circuit drew a solid local entry, with the bigger names mostly still on their way home from New Zealand's Nissan-Mobil Series. Larry Perkins entered, but didn't quite make it back in time. Cars making their debut were Colin Bond's long-awaited Alfa Romeo 75, and two Ford Sierra RS Cosworths from the OXO team. Tony Noske planned to have his first run in his ex-Perkins VK but put it into the wall during practice, while Phil Ward had the first of many drives in his ex-AMG Mercedes-Benz 190E. Reed mastered the greasy early conditions to run out a comfortable winner from Bond. Laurie Hazelton backed his Volvo into the pit wall late in the race, injuring a TV cameraman. Magazine sources disagree over whether the crash caused the race to be stopped, something I suspect the TV coverage would solve.

1/3/1987 - ATCC1 - Calder Park, Vic
1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 1 - Calder Park, VIC (1/3/1987) Circuit Length: 2.40 km Race Distance: 60 laps Weather: Overcast The big story before the race meeting was Holden's dumping of Peter Brock a week prior. The originally planned 3-car attack was pared down to two, with the team's new VL auctioned off to raise funds. Gary Scott was drafted in to replace the departing Allan Moffat and John Harvey. The JPS team debuted the new BMW M3 - not yet officially homologated until race-day - along with Dick Johnson's new Sierras, now in the red and yellow colours of Shell as part of a rumoured million-dollar sponsorship deal. Grice was back in a Roadways-prepared VK, alongside him Graeme Crosby, while Andrew Miedecke joined the OXO team to drive the #35 car alongside Don Smith. Unchanged apart from Scott's departure was the Nissan team, with two cars for George Fury and Glenn Seton, the team having sorted out their tyre-chewing issues from Bathurst 1986. The front row had a new look to it, a wet qualifying session saw Richards and Johnson qualifying their new cars 1-2. It would be Dick's best qualifying performance of the ATCC. The rolling start works against the men on the front row, the normally-aspirated runners coming the the fore. Perkins makes a storming start before outbraking himself at the end of the straight and running off the circuit, letting Seton through into a lead he wouldn't lose. Brock, Fury, and a recovering Perkins would give chase, until Brock dropped out with engine issues.

8/3/1987 - ATCC2 - Symmons Plains, TAS
1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 2 - Symmons Plains, TAS (8/3/1987) Circuit Length: 2.41 km Race Distance: 60 laps Weather: Overcast A much smaller field appeared seven days later at Symmons Plains, but all the lead runners were there. Grice and Fury locked out the front row, the Commodore driver leading the race comfortably until overheating crippled the car with 10 laps to go. Fury went on to win from Richards, who charged through to 2nd as the bigger cars ran out of tyres after half distance. The Sierras teams were still struggling to replicate the results from their European counterparts, turning down the boost and sacrificing speed for reliability.

22/3/1987 - U2LATCC1 - Winton, VIC
1987 Under 2 Litre Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 1 - Winton, VIC (22/3/1987) Circuit Length: 2.03 km Race Distance: 25 laps The first round of the 2 litre championship would see their biggest entry for a standalone round in either year of the championship. All the main little-car runners were there, the field only bolstered by two Group E production car runners. The race was dominated by the factory 1600cc Toyotas, Smith winning comfortably from team-mate Price in the AE86 coupes. Of interest is Mark Skaife, who made his race debut for the Peter Jackson Nissan team at this round.

27/3/1987 - AMSCAR1 - Amaroo Park, NSW
James Hardie Industries Iplex AMSCAR Series
Round 1 (27/3/1987) Circuit Length: 1.946 km The first AMSCAR round of the year saw Frank Gardner enter three of the little M3s, with the team's engine builder Ludwig Finauer making his first Group A start. Peter Williamson also entered his Supra, hopefully free of the bad luck that seemed to have plagued it since the car dealer brought it into the country. The rounds would follow the same structure: three heats of 5, 10 and 15 laps. The winner of the round was a surprise, Trevor Ashby upsetting the JPS armada after Richards' exhaust problems in heat 2. Ashby's win in that heat would be the last race win for a Commodore (excluding Brock's 'eventual' win at Bathurst) until the end of 1988. Heat 1 Race Distance: 5 laps
Heat 2 Race Distance: 10 laps
Heat 3 Race Distance: 15 laps

5/4/1987 - ATCC3 - Lakeside, QLD
1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 3 - Lakeside, QLD (5/4/1987) Circuit Length: 2.41 km Race Distance: 60 laps Weather: Overcast Crosby couldn't find any sponsorship so the Roadways team were down to one car for Grice, but it was a brand-spanking-new VL, the first to run in the ATCC. Meanwhile, the former factory team were also down to one car after Gary Scott crashed Brock's #05 during mid-week testing. Brock would race #6 until his new VL was ready, qualifying it on the front row next to pole-sitter Seton. Seton would lead from the start, before local hero Johnson powered through the field into the lead. It wasn't to last, the engine crying enough just after half-distance, the same taking out team-mate Hansford a few laps later. At another tyre-sensitive track, Richards' M3 again came through for the win, from Seton and Longhurst. Post-race scrutineering revealed illegal impellers in the turbochargers of the Johnson cars. As the entrant, Dick was found guilty of presenting illegal cars and given a ban by CAMS, even if it was for only seven days. Dick said the impellers were the same as those being used in Europe... I'm not sure whether to classify the Johnson cars as being disqualified or not. IIRC, I don't think my sources have. The OXO cars were for a similar offence later in the year.

26/4/1987 - ATCC4 - Wanneroo Park, WA
1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 4 - Wanneroo Park, WA (26/4/1987) Circuit Length: 2.41 km Race Distance: 55 laps Weather: Overcast All the main runners made the long trek west to Wanneroo while several locals made up the rest of the field. Fury put his Skyline on pole, but his efforts came to naught when he broke an axle at the start. He lost several laps as repairs were made, the Talmalmo farmer eventually setting the fastest lap of the race. Perkins led first time across the line, but was passed by Seton into turn one. From there, the Skyline was never headed. Perkins, meanwhile, became embroiled in a huge scrap with Allan Grice, the two Commodore runners rubbing panels on several occasions. Johnson carefully picked his way past the pair to take second. The battle eventually took its toll, with Grice pitting for a new set of rubber. Seton ran out a comfortable winner from Johnson, Perkins, and Richards.

3/5/1987 - ATCC5 - Adelaide International Raceway, SA
1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 5 - Adelaide International Raceway, SA (3/5/1987) Circuit Length: 2.41 km Race Distance: 60 laps Weather: Overcast Adelaide's long front straight was expected to suit the Commodores and the turbos, but at the end of qualifying it was Richards' black JPS BMW on pole. The two M3s had towed each other down the straight, the tow being enough for the #3 M3 to top the timesheet from Perkins and Grice. However, another rolling start (in an unusual 3-2-3 formation to reflect the Adelaide grid) saw the little black car swamped by the bigger ones, with Perkins leading Grice and Fury into the first corner. The top order was steady for a few laps, before Fury dived below Grice heading into the bowl to take second. Johnson was trapped behind the two JPS cars for several laps before moving past them one-by-one. Longhurst brushed the wall with the left rear coming onto the straight, the bent panel eventually blowing the tyre sending him to the pits late in the race. Johnson would soon take the lead from Perkins, with Fury soon following the Ford pilot through. Seton blew an engine around half distance, while Perkins and Grice resumed their battle from the week before. This time the Roadways pilot tapped the back of the Perkins' Commodore entering turn 1, and was lucky not to crash into the spinning Enzed car. In the end, Johnson would win comfortably from Fury, who held out Grice for second.

James Hardie Industries Iplex AMSCAR Series
Round 2 (17/5/1987) Circuit Length: 1.946 km Weather: Overcast Mitsubishi made their comeback to Australian touring car racing, with Brad Jones aboard a Dulux-backed Starion run by Ralliart in Adelaide, while Nissan ventured up to Amaroo with a car for Fury. Longhurst's weekend ended early after badly bending his M3 in practice, while Fury swept all three heats. Heat 1 Race Distance: 5 laps
Heat 2 Race Distance: 10 laps

31/5/1987 - ATCC6 - Surfers Paradise, QLD
1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 6 - Surfers Paradise, QLD (31/5/1987) Circuit Length: 2.41 km Race Distance: 46 laps Weather: Cloudy Delayed by a week due to flooding, this would turn out to be the final time the ATCC ventured to Surfers Paradise Raceway before it closed down at the end of the year. Grice was scheduled to miss this race as it clashed with the World 600 NASCAR race, but Commodore numbers were maintained as the HDT welcomed back Gary Scott, Brock finally debuting his new VL. Meanwhile, John Giddings was now in the second OXO Sierra after buying the car from Don Smith. Johnson put his Sierra on pole but blew the engine half was around the first lap, Hansford capping off a bad day for the Shell team when his engine went south a lap later. Scott put in a great drive to run near the front in the first half of the race, but dropped back as his tyres wore out. The two M3s looked after their tyres, Richards running out a comfortable winner. Miedecke had his best run of the year finishing second, but post-race scrutineering revealed illegalities in the turbochargers of both OXO cars. They raced the rest of the year under appeal but eventually were found guilty, receiving the same 7-day punishment as Johnson and exclusion from the results of Surfers, Sandown, and Amaroo.

7/6/1987 - ATCC7 - Sandown Park, VIC
1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 7 - Sandown Park, VIC (7/6/1987) Circuit Length: 3.90 km Race Distance: 30 laps Weather: Sunny The biggest field of the year rolled up to Sandown, where the race would go ahead without television coverage after a technician's strike. The two Skylines of Kent Baigent and Graeme Bowkett made their way across the Tasman for the first time in 1987. The two Peter Jackson Skylines dominated proceedings, Fury moving aside in the closing laps to let Seton earn maximum championship points. Richards left Sandown with no points after a disasterous first lap for the JPS team. A first corner clash with Miedecke sent both M3s running over the exit kerb; Longhurst retired on the spot after the sump was ripped off the engine, while Richards dented his. The dent would starve the engine of oil, the M3's engine crying enough on the last lap.
Meanwhile, the Under 2 Litre Championship had its second round, run concurrently with the ATCC round. The results were taken after - I think - 20 laps, not the full 30 lap ATCC distance. I don't have full results of this, but Skaife won. |

5/7/1987 - ATCC9 - Oran Park, NSW
1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 9 - Oran Park, NSW (5/7/1987) Circuit Length: 2.62 km Race Distance: 50 laps Weather: Overcast with Showers With only three points between Seton and Richards in the championship, both teams entered three cars in an effort to win. JPS had their regular lineup of Richards, Longhurst and Finauer, while Nissan entered a third Skyline for John Bowe to join Seton and Fury. Eventually though, neither team's third car would play a significant part in the championship decider. Again, this one's on YouTube too, so go have a watch! One of the better title deciders in ATCC history.

Under 2 Litre Australian Touring Car Championship
1987 Under 2 Litre Australian Touring Car Championship
The 2L championship whimpered along to a conclusion before the enduros, with two final rounds at Lakeside and Amaroo. The field was once again filled out with Group E production cars. Skaife would win both rounds, taking out the championship. According to AMRY, the points were as follows: Skaife 107, Price 102, Faulkner 87, Smith 84, Ratcliff 74, Holden 24 Not sure what points scheme this would follow, certainly not the standard ATCC one. Round 3 - Lakeside, QLD (22/3/1987) Circuit Length: 2.41 km Race Distance: 25 laps
Round 4 - Amaroo Park, NSW (2/8/1987) Circuit Length: 1.946 km Race Distance: 20 laps Weather: Rain

2/8/1987 - AMSCAR4 - Amaroo Park, NSW
James Hardie Industries Iplex AMSCAR Series
Round 4 - Hardie Irrigation 100 (2/8/1987) Circuit Length: 1.946 km Race Distance: 100 laps The first "enduro" of the year and the last AMSCAR round of the year. The JPS team won comfortably, although there was a near-miss early in the race. Steve Reed crashed the Lansvale Commodore exiting the Dunlop loop in the slippery early conditions, sliding to a stop in the middle of the road. The car was then collected by an unsighted Terry Shiel in the Peter Jackson Gazelle, badly damaging both cars. Richards, lapping Shiel, only just avoided getting caught up in the accident.

9/8/1987 - Yokohama / Bob Jane T-Marts Super Series - Calder Park, VIC
Sun 300?
Calder Park, VIC (9/8/1987) Circuit Length: 4.22 km Race Distance: 70 laps Weather: Cloudy This was the first meeting on the combined road course and Thunderdome, later to be used for the WTCC round in October. Not completely sure what the race was called, though. Can anyone confirm it was called the Sun 300? Larry Perkins' delivered his first customer car to Bill O'Brien, and nearly co-drove it to a win. After a bump while lapping a slower car damaged the steering, Larry left it until the final lap to perform the driver change, but the Bowe/Shiel Skyline snuck through for the win.

30/8/1987 - Pepsi 250 - Oran Park, NSW
Pepsi 250
Oran Park, NSW (30/8/1987) Circuit Length: 2.62 km Race Distance: 100 laps Weather: Cloudy with showers Colin Bond's Alfa had undergone a post-ATCC rebuild, including a switch to RHD. The work paid dividends with Bond putting the red car third on the grid, although turbo problems would put the car out early. The factory Starion missed the race after new driver Gary Scott hit a patch of oil and crashed the car during practice. Peter Brock finally had his VL on the pace, and came close to winning the race until a slow pitstop and driver change let Richards and Longhurst go through for an easy win.

13/9/1987 - Castrol 500 - Sandown Park, VIC
Castrol 500
Sandown Park, VIC (13/9/1987) Circuit Length: 3.90 km Race Distance: 129 laps Weather: Cloudy with showers The new RS500 made quite an impact on its Australian debut. Andrew Miedecke put his Sierra on pole, until co-driver Don Smith rolled the car late in the qualifying session, writing it off. Johnson then put his on pole in the qualifying shootout, but blew the team's last engine in the morning warmup. Johnson and Hansford switched to the #18 car for the race and, from 13th place on the grid, Johnson proceeded to simply drive past everyone on the straights until he reached the lead. However, not knowing how long the engine would last, Johnson gave Neville Crichton the chance to get some laps in the car in preparation for Bathurst, the car reaching lap 87 before it was pushed away. Up front, it was a battle between the two PJ Skylines and Grice, but the orange Bob Jane car headed to the pits with a misfire. It went back to a three car dice as Johnson joined in, the Sierra making ground down the straights and the Skylines pulling it back in the twisty infield section. Seton led after Johnson made his first pitstop but he too was soon into the pits, a blown exhaust turbine wheel putting the #15 car out of contention. The rest of the race was between Fury and Richards, as changing conditions favoured each car at different times. Eventually, the matter was settled a handful of laps from the end, the BMW's engine crying enough with 12 laps to go. Fury would score a comfortable win, the team's second consecutive triumph in the Sandown enduro.

4/10/1987 - James Hardie 1000 - Mount Panorama, NSW
James Hardie 1000
Mount Panorama, NSW (4/10/1987) Circuit Length: 6.216 km Race Distance: 161 laps (158 completed by eventual winner) Weather: Cloudy with heavy rain The world comes to Bathurst! Unfortunately, the European's liberal interpretation of the rule book doesn't sit well with the Australians. The ultimate conclusion of this is the protest against the Eggenberger Sierras that would see them disqualified, costing them the World Touring Car Drivers' Championship. As it was, Soper/Dieudonne won Bathurst on the road by a couple of laps from the two Klauses in the #7 car. Andrew Miedecke and Allan Grice were the only Aussies to put up a strong challenge. Miedecke battled with Soper and Rouse in the early stages, and would hold the fastest lap of the race after the Texaco cars were scrubbed from the results. A dying alternator put the OXO car out of contention. Grice and Percy ran inside the top three until their retirement. Dick Johnson's team could pack up early after both of their cars were out by lap three, capping off a bad weekend for the team after both cars were eliminated from Hardie's Heroes for fuel irregularities (the fuel was of a lower grade due to a mistake made by the team, but rules are rules). In the under 2.5L class, the JPS BMWs eventually bested their European counterparts, although the CiBiEmme car was on or ahead of their pace. Their challenge was interrupted when the second rainstorm caused Cecotto to crash at Reid Park. The Schnitzer team suffered a dreadful week with two cars badly crashed by Roberto Ravaglia and Mercedes Stermitz. Apart from Cecotto's crash, the second rainstorm caused havoc on top of the mountain. The factory Corollas crashed at the same spot - handing the class win to last-man-standing Bob Holden - as did several other cars.

11/10/1987 - Bob Jane T-Marts 500 - Calder Park, VIC
Bob Jane T-Marts 500
Calder Park, VIC (11/10/1987) Circuit Length: 4.22 km Race Distance: 120 laps Weather: Showers clearing to overcast Once again the Texaco Sierras dominated proceedings, and once again the Australian challenge fell apart. The #7 car had a gearbox problem, dropping them out of the top ten and arguably helping cost them the WTCC crown. The Schnitzer BMWs finished 2nd and 3rd after air-freighting over a new car to replace the badly bent #46 car. The Rouse car once again retired before Allan Moffat could have a drive.

12/11/1987 - South Australia Cup - Adelaide Grand Prix Circuit, SA
South Australia Cup
Adelaide Grand Prix Circuit, SA (12/11/1987) Circuit Length: 3.78 km Race Distance: 32 laps Weather: Sunny The last touring car race on Australian soil for the year. Delays in shipping cars back from New Zealand hampered the preparations of some, while Fred Gibson stole a march over his opposition by air-freighting his cars back. Johnson worked his way into a comfortable lead after the early laps. Both Brock - who was notified that morning that he had actually won Bathurst - and Seton went out after challenging early while, behind Johnson, Grice and Perkins resumed their now-usual battle. Fury made his way past the dueling Commodores late in the race, and started closing rapidly on Johnson when the Sierra started having fuel pick-up problems in the last couple of laps. Johnson brought the ailing car over the line for his second victory of 1987, a consolation after a terrible year. Fury finished second, with Perkins beating Grice to third.

Well, that's all I've got for 1987. The results are from a mix of AMRY 17, The Great Race 1987/88, Bathurst 1987/88, race programmes for the meetings I have (can't remember which ones), and and the relevant issues of Racing Car News and Auto Action. The Castrol 500 and U2LATCC R1 results are partially from RaceTime, back when they had such things available.
I'm lacking entry data in some instances, mainly for the Castrol Clash and some ATCC rounds, and a confirmation of results from the Sandown U2L round would be appreciated. |

Then ImProd racer and Volvo nut Richard Prince bought the car, repaired it and it now runs regularly in historic Group A. Amazingly it only did two race meetings in the first 20 years of its life! |
