Fire Breathing Monsters!
I was wondering which Le Mans/ALMS/LMS race cars had the largest backfiring flame from any era.
A few examples off the top of my head that I can remember are the BMW M3 GTR (huge flames from those beauties), the Ferrari 333sp, Toyota GT1, Lamborghini GT1, 2000 Cadillac LMP900, Maser MC12 GT1, and the RfH Dome S101. What other fire breathing monsters do you remember??? |

Way cool jhansen! Photos of LM cars breathing flames always make for the best pictures. Every year I attend to the Petit Le Mans I try to get a few myself, though it can be hard to get a good shot. When you do get a good shot of some flame action, it always will be a beautiful photo!!!
More suggestions! |

The 2003 Pescarolos were fire breathing, especially through the Ford Chicanes.

Remember seeing a few nice flames from the back of the Ultima racing in the British GT championship this year. not a car at Le Mans but still, same kinda thing...
Plus I can't remember which car exactly but one of the old Porsches in the CER race that supported the LMES at Silverstone kept spitting out a good few flames. Spent ages, unsuccessfully, trying to grab a picture of that in friday practice. |

Specifically the M3 GTRs at the Spa 24 when Thiessen had them dumping more raw fuel out the exhaust (reportedly) to enhance photo ops and thus press, much to the (again, reported) chagrin of Charlie Lamm, who obviously wanted maximum fuel efficiency.
They were always spectacular as you've noted, but check them at this specific race for the full effect. |

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...flameporka.jpg and if you want big flames i think that the LMES spec team LNT tvr's made the biggest flames without a doubt at the lmes, the BMW GTR would be hard pushed to beat some of the efforts ive seen out of those tiv exhaust pipes! Hi there ten tenths....... i'm a first time poster long time reader (more than 2 years now!!!) |

Welcome ccharlie6!
I go for the Porsche 935's, not only with the big gout of flame but also the glowing turbo housings hanging out in the breeze out back. Next, will never forget the Lancia Beta MonteCarlo's, which would dump a little flame out of the wastegate pipe on overrun. The exhaust was mounted high and in the center of the rear, and the wastegate pipe was probably only as big around as your thumb, but it popped out this splendid little flame with a corresponding poof or bang. robert |

My first thoughts were the Porsche 935 but then i remembered marshalling at the German group 5 races at Donington way back and the Zackspeed Capris and Escorts had a massive tail of fire as they braked for the old Hairpin - now they were monsters

But the best i ever saw was the Finotta/Facetti Ferrari 308t/c that raced in 81. Massive flame whenever it backed of. |

Going back a bit (but as people are citing the 935 etc probably allowable...) I remember seeing a fantastic photo in one of Grand Prix International's sportscar issues of the Richard Cleare Kremer CK-5 with virtually more flame than car. Particularly memorable as they gave it one of their double page spreads despite it being a chopped photo (even drawing attention to it) simply because the amount of fire etc was so spectacular. Almost worth the trip out to the garage to go and find it...

Yes - got that one of the CK5. Its the Le Mans 83 mag' IIRC. And I agree - the most dragon-esque (is that a word?!) sportscar ever!

Another TVR, this one shot at this year's Nurburgring 1000kms.
Not that big, but it was almost constantly on fire... http://www.planetlemans.com/index.ph...view_photo.php |

The MC12 has a pretty amazing backfire... it was by far the most beautiful car at night during this year's 12 Hours. All four rotors were bright red under braking, the V12 was just beautiful to listen to, and the backfire would light up everything within 100 feet behind the car.

Not sure too much about the 996 and 550 - I'd say yes but not big ones. I've found quite a nice one - the '03 Jag XK8 from British GT...
