Public liability insurance for photography
I need to start looking into this, for going trackside at motorsport events. Anyone know a good place to start? Cheers for your help.

not sure if this is exactly what you need but you could try Events Insurance Services

You should find in your household insurance that you may have public liability insurance (thats if you have a house)...mine does with the Nationwide. This brings me on to another thought (if you don't mind!) and that is does anybody have insurance for themselves at race meetings? I'd be keen to know as (god help that it doesn't) it is a dangerous sport and you never know what might happen during a day.
I stood next to someone on their 1st day with a camera at Snet' a few years ago and their reactions were not as mine. A car slid off at full speed at Russell and hit the barrier where they were...the barrier was pushed back a few feet with the huge impact and they were sent flying and landed with a huge crunch and a kneck and back injury. They couldn't work for months afterwards. We need to be covered for any problem that could occur. What do others do???? |

I live in a house... but my dad owns it. Does that count?
I need to get the insurance, I've already annoyed MSV enough, and they keep asking for it. So it's vital that I have it. |

I got away without insurance last year (young, fearless - and stupid?) - only place I got refused was Snetterton - stupid here forgot his accreditation letter.
My club may pay for me this year - which is something I will look in to - I don't want to be refused if they tighten up. Last edited by JamesC; 18 Mar 2005 at 10:28. |

Are-so you got taken care of by our "friend" at Snet' then. I understand he maybe there again this year so be wary. Hopefully he would have taken a course in "being polite at all times" over the slack period but I doubt it!

I kind of hope he is... I shall come along with everything this year - including a smug look on my face.
Actually - I've just remembered - I will be covered by clubs insurance - which I think will be enough. |

If you have taken out a seperate insurance ( mechanical etc ) on your camera equipment most of the policies include liability insurance , however certain circuits for example Oulton / Brands etc require a minimum of £5m

Yeah, I need it for Snetterton mainly, and possibly Oulton. Anyone know roughly how much it will cost me? Cheers.

For any Race Event be it cars or bikes, the sports governing body (MSA or ACU) provides Public Liability for all 'officials' of the event including accredited journo's. The point there being you must be accredited. The Organising Club may be willing to offer help in that direction, though they mostly already have 'their' official photographers only other way is if you actually represent a recognised journal.
if you are 'Freelance' and can't solve this isue by either of the above methods, then you will need your own PLI for minimum of £5M (for MSV). I would doubt that your household Ins would cover you whilst trackside, but a call to your insurers would answer that query. in addition, if you are not accredited and 'on your own' a fee may be payable to the venue if you wish to retail your photographs in any way shape of form. Other than that Andy Bothwell at Brands Hatch can answer any all queries you have that would relate to any Race day at MSV's venues. If you want to take photo's on ANY activity not covered by an MSA/ACU permit at an MSV venue, then you MUST have your own PLI, or be working for a Journal who can provide accreditation, accepting that they have appropriate cover for you.. However please note that on certain days the copyright to all recorded images may have been retained by those making use of the track and as such no-one else would be able to 'sign-on', or on occasion even be allowed on site. This is not done to annoy any-one its just sometimes the hirer's contract requires 'exclusive use'. Hope this answers some of your questions... |

So, if I was doing a meeting for a website or magazine that had provided me with a letter of accreditation, would I not need insurance?

Looks good, but it says 1 million, and I need 5 million for the MSV tracks.

Photogaurd include £1 million as standard, you can increase this to £5 million for an extra £61 (you can see this in the application form) Glover & Howe are another to consider
Cheers Ian |
