Rallycross Gp Brands Hatch 1985, 86, or 87
Has anybody got any video footage of the race in which Franz Wurz was excluded after an incident just before the first bend after the startline. The Grand Prix I think was either 1985, 86 or 87 it resulted in Keith Ripp hitting the wall.

Franz Wurz did a RX comeback in 1982 (winning his third ERC title) and 1983. His B2000 quattro was sold to Dimi Mavropoulos at the eve of the 1983 Grand Prix at Brands Hatch.

Easy to say by then as he had already decided to quit RX. In 1983 and 1984 he did some rallies (Argentine, Safari, Turkey) before he completely retired from motor sport to become the managing director of the Austrian so-called Safer Driving Centres of the RAC counterpart ÖAMTC.

Ronnie was a good friend of mine. I met him the last time in his "White Walls Hotel" near Perranporth in Cornwall. He had already decided to go back to Borehamwood when he got a heart attack and died. Did your dad drive Ron's R5 with the 1.7 turbo engine Ron bought from Volvo R-Sport in Sweden?

BTW, according to the different car pics it seems that your dad was a good friend of the late Allan "Mister Car Colours" Franklin too… I used to call him "Allan the leech".

The TVR was bought by Ron Johnson he used it mainly for Autocross and a few rallycross events, It was Johnson who introduced my late father Lenny Pepper to both Rallycross, Ronnie and Joan. Dad did use the 1.7 enginge he had a lot of help from Willy Van Herk to get the engine sorted there is still lots of parts for the enginge in the Garage / Workshop at home.
Dad would have laughed at the thought of you referring to Alan as a Leech. Alan was always very good to me he gave me quite a few model cars from his collection which I still have. |

So I was on the wrong trail thinking that you are Ron Johnson’s offspring…
AFAIR Ronnie used a TVR Griffith in a few RX events, but spun it many times and became fed up with it. AFAIK Willy (aka Wim) Van Herck used one of the younger 2.3 16V engines in his own Volvo 343, but they had a Volvo workshop and that older and small engine was based on a DAF motor and the block was used by Volvo as well as Renault, IIRC. When Allan and I were negotiating the prices of ads in my RX yearbooks or pics in my RX calendars he was keen trying to fleece me. That is why I called him a leech and he had his fun about it. When he phoned later on he always claimed "hi Eddi, this is Allan Leech speaking"… BTW, any idea if Joan is still around and well? Did not see her since me and my wife have been to Perrancoombe in the summer of 1985. Ron died there in July 1988, at my current age 57, while planning to move back to Borehamwood, as told to me by Allan Franklin then. |

Last i heard was that Joan moved back to Boreham Wood with their son! I will ask the Johnsons as I know they kept in touch. |

Bulletin No 25 of December 12 (GP on Sunday!) 1982 reads:
'E' Franz Wurz, Audi quattro, Heat 1 = 0 points (no time set), Heat 2 = 3.35.5 = E (excluded), Heat 3 = 0 points (no time set). Thereby, he was not qualified for the GP finals. |

Hello,
Sorry to revive an old an old thread like this, but I wonder if anyone could help me. I was spending the day with my Grandmother, when she happened to mention her brother and his racing career. She told me to see if I could find anything. Ronnie Douglas was his name, and this thread is the first instance of his name I could find any real information about. My Grandmother unfortunately din't spend a lot of time with him. They have a very large family and she was the youngest by far. Most are no longer with us. Any pictures that anyone might have, or information about his career, or even footage, would be really great to shower her. Thanks in advance and sorry if this is this in the wrong place. |

Ron Douglas is a complete and utter legend of world and British rallycross.
He was a multiple champion of many series and also a man who drove all sorts of different cars from mid engined Escorts to renault 5's and the like. As I recall he passed away in the late 80's and I think Eddi did a tribute to him in one of his brilliant rallycross yearbooks of him sitting on his roof doing some slating! Ron is the original Mr Rallycross really and guys like Eddi, Bill Mantovani, Tony Nisbett will likely have far more recollections than I as I regret I never saw him race. |

Sorry for my late answer, but I wasn't here in the forum for a while. I have known Ron (full name Ronald Samuel) and his wife Joan from the mid 1970s till the late 1980s, meeting them often at the Rallycross venues, one year even in Finland. I have only very little memories left of me and my wife meeting them two at 5 Brownlow Road in Borehamwood for two days (think it was in the Summer of 1978, when we went up to Ullapool in Scotland for vacation). But when he quit Rallycross to run the White Walls Hotel in Perrancoombe, outside Perranporth in Cornwall, we have been with them for a whole week in the Summer of 1985. They both were great characters and Ron had always a lot to tell. I understood that he died after suffering a heard attack while digging a hole in his hotel garden, on July 6 1988, being just 57 years of age. Someone told me some years ago that he had claimed to Joan that this hole would kill him, before she found him dead beside it just a little later. If you give me your email address (possibly by PM) I'm going to mail you those pictures of Ron I already have on my harddrive. I defo have more racing pictures in my files, but only yet unscanned slides and negatives. Regards from Germany, Eddi Laumanns

Thanks to the others in the thread too. I had no idea just how accomplished he was! Nice to have a little piece of my families history discovered. Much appreciated. |
