Tyre warmers were banned on a cost-saving basis.

I pointed out to TOCA that this was an entirely pointless saving as virually all the teams that were going to be in the ST class already had tyre warmers from the '99 season.

All the band achieved was to leave them with a load of useless kit, that would have to be written off after one year as opposed to a longer period.

As a safety issue some it is debateable as tyre warmers are not used in any other TOCA support races. I guess driving on cold tyes is supposed to be the drivers art - have we seen anymore incidents since JT's BH shunt?

Personally from competition point of view I see no problem in banning tyre warmers, from a commercial point of view (which is the reason the decision was made), it didn't make any sense to me.

No real need for tyre warmers anyway, no one else has them for racing (apart from top international guys)...

On a touring car, cold tyres will just cause dire understeer at most corners.. As Mr Thompson had before he got to Dingle Dell. So perhaps he should have thought about going through Dingle Dell at full chat!!!! Everyone else got through ok...

What posessed the BTCC to ban tyre warmers, did they really think that warm tyres give you that much of an advantage, have they totally disregarded the safety aspect of rejoining a race and going straight into race pace on cold tyres? James Thompson has already shown us the consequences. Idiots!!!

I think we're all in agreement that the bloke with fluff on his face was an oaf with that manouveure...!

I think that TOCA knew things were going to be dire this year, and were looking for things which they could do which might stir the show up a little - which it certainly did at Brands!
