The right attitude.
Hope you guys won't mind it being pointed out, but as your mental attitude towards winning races actually counts hugely, you may find serious inspiration from the bike boys doing Moto GP this year.
Actually, international big bike racing has always been a bit special. But Moto GP this year is phenominal. 240 bhp through a contact patch smaller than your shoe sole (that's bright blue smoke off burning rear tyres that are being power-slid at 100 mph) and brave brave riders (208 mph at Mugello last week, and a tyre blew out at top speed) with amazing agression (Rossi from 4th to 1st in one lap), you will not see a better example of 'the right stuff' anywhere in the world at the moment. The whole show in fact is top class. I'm soaked in sweat just watching. If you'd like to know just what attitude is needed to win races, watch Moto GP I suggest. Oh, and the grid crumpet ... ... |

I love to race! I've got 240hp! I've even been known to make up three places on a single lap! Trouble is my race car weighs 1000kg and has an arse the width of a full grown African elephant. If I went about showing "amazing aggression" I'd find myself in front of a Clerk of the Course before my contact patch had touched the ground. In my book, getting me, my car, and all the cars near my car, to the end of the race in one piece is the first priority. In the mean time I think I'll leave "power sliding at 100mph" to the professionals.

Another area of motorsport where people push to the very limit and have to be mentally strong and brave is international karting. Those things have so much grip they can flip over just from going round a corner. They would break the ribs of a normal human in just a few laps of being driven on the limit.

Dear All
I love bike racing especially the powerslide stuff With the new profile rubber. Looks so scary. About mental attitude. Being the whole nine yards has always required a distinct disregard for feelings of concern over small problems like sudden seizure of engine or gearbox in the apex of the fastest turn. My brother was always good at ignoring little dangers and was very fast because of it. I on the other hand had a more vivid sense of self preservation or imagination and am slower but then that's just experience I am an engineer and I get to deal with what has just gone wrong all the time. Maybe if you don't see what can happen maybe you don't think about it. Its the difference between thinking that the bit of paint that fell off just under the headstock either is because there is probably a crack there or my brothers attitude of take it round a few quick laps and see if it feels wierd and I am out getting a rockwell crack testing kit. Still I am much to old for bike racing now my old injurys got in motocross make taking a quick dab at a ton plus to put the front wheel back under it Rossi syle wont work now. Maybe I can get an Engineer/Throttle/navigators seat in offshore powerboat racing. I can still swim quite well. Regards Mark |

you make a very good point bassmec . . . .mechanical knowledge . . . .It amazes me how many people crash or have mechanical failures at the very end of a race . . .they obviously have no idea how things work . . . surely in (virtually) any race scenario finishing second instead of winning is better than a DNF . . . .especially if the failure means your sanding the crown jewels down to the bone on some hot tarmac !!!

It's not just international karting where such grip levels are to be had, I've raced many a time where mid corner grip resulted in two wheel cornering, it comes in very useful as you can drive a shorter lap by taking curb without touching them!.... went from 20th to chanllenging for the lead on 12 laps. Great fun..
