Irv the Swerve should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Irish Formula Vee Championship season opener

A storming opening round to the Irish Formula Vee Championship took place on Saturday at the super fast Kirkistown Circuit in Northern Ireland.

Testing pointed to a debut pole position for Leastone Racing driver David Heavey and this is how it turned out, with Robbie Parks and Peter Donnelly in the top three.

The race was unlucky for heavey who was dicing for the lead with championship favourite Dermot Doherty when he pulled off approaching the flat out Debltors Dip corner with engine trouble. Anton Savage and David Cassidy also retired leaving Doherty to win from Kirkistown specialist Gerard O'Callaghan. Gary Newsome made the podium for the second time of the day with a smooth drive to third. Robbie Parks came home fouth. The battle for fifth was a shocker with Robert Casey and Brian Walsh ending the race tied on times and visually inseparable. Casey lead onto the final lap with Walsh making a move at the hairpin. Casey dipped back inside and the two ended up absolutely level across the line. Casey got the nod from the stewards and took fifth.

Results.

1. Dermot Doherty 14:01.47
2. Gerard Callaghan @00:02.71
3. Gary Newsome @00:03.32
4. Robbie Parkes @00:04.95
5. Robert Casey @00:08.74
6. Brian Walsh @00:08.74

Fastest Lap: Anton Savage 1:07.31

That'd make you the race correspondent... Send on any reports or photos that you have. The gallery needs filling out.
