What is the best F1 racing game for a PC?

I am basically a new F1 fan (I watched it only intermittenently in the past) and want to play the best F1 simulation on PC, preferably one which allows you to race online against other people. I have long been an avid online racer in NASCAR games but due to my new addication to F1, plus the need for a change after all these years of NASCAR games, I am looking to buy a F1 computer game. What game is the best? It seems that F12002 is considered to be the best right now.

For me, the best F1 game on PC would have to be without a doubt F1 challenge 99-02, its modability is awesome, as well as the graphics, gameplas etc.. strongly recommended.

Another vote for F1 Challenge 99-02 (aka. F1C), and by a long way.

Well, my vote would go for Grand Prix legends too, if 60s Grand Prix cars are what you're after. But since I suspect its modern F1 that you are enquiring about, then I'd say F1C looks to be the best.

F1 Challenge '99-'02 is your one stop shop for sim racing on the PC at the moment.

Wow, it seems unamious for F1C, especially given what I want. I will go to the local video game store tonight to see if they have it in stock!

Thank you all for the input!

Well, I vote GP4 if you can live with no online play, I find F1C a bit wierd, it just doesn't feel right - having said that I've been playing the Grand Prix series since the first game!

Many will say Grand Prix Legends and I would a agree. GP4 over F1 2002 by far, love GP4 so much In fact thought I did a full length British Grand Prix today.
Never played F1C would love to...

Grand Prix 3 is, I think, the best. GP4 is toooo buggy to play properly, especially during pitstops.

From my experience, if you really want to drive those nasty modern things, F1C is the best. But, as well all know only too well, GPL provides the best racing experience there is on a PC.

Unfortunately, since these games are a bit dated and F1 is unpopular in the US none of these games are sold at stores here. I had no choice but to order a game from amazon.com. F1C was selling for a whopping $150 so I opted to buy F12002 for $43. Amazon itself does not sell it but does so via a third party. I played the game for the first time today and I noticed that there is no option listed for multiplayer racing or even running a championship season. There also is no testing. All it has is each circuit and you can run individual races on them. Is the game supposed to be like this initially, with the player having to "unlock" other options, or was I sold a bootleg version of the game?

$150 for an 3 year old game(or something like that)?!?!?

I don't know but I have to agree with Kidzer. F1C feels a bit strange. I really don't know where all the animosity against GP4 comes from. The game was not perfect but it was the best in my opinion (GPL aside).

It's a shame though that there aren't any more F1 games being made for PC.

Yeah, NASCAR 2k3 is a similar story.

Both games are in great demand because of the mods out for them and I don't believe they're still being sold new.

You'd think if there was a market someone would re-release them like GPL was re-released by Sold-Out software.

For NASCAR 2k3 Dave Kaemmer (Papyrus founder) has set up a new venture called First-Racing to replace Papyrus (which essentially went bust as I understand it) which is taking back all the rights to their Nascar titles and ostensibly GPL too. Now they're intent on making some money out of the existing NR2k3 addons community (not through game sales though, through making people pay for mods. Some of it goes to the modder and the rest to first, AFAIK). Supposedly GPL is 'safe', but I do wonder for how long...

EDIT: That is the situation as far as I know. Someone else may know better as there've been a heck of a lot of rumours flying about...

You should have tried eBay.

That's where I bought my copy of F1C, for just £18.50
