Friday practice thread
Friday practice starts in about 5 minutes.
Don't expect to see too many of the front-runners out and about on Friday. Webber practically admitted to the Age yesterday that he won't be doing much, if any, track time on Friday, preferring to leave it to Alex Wurz to do the grunt work. At BMW, Kubica will probably do most of the work, with JV needing to preserve his engine for the race. Heidfeld may be more likely to do some Friday running. Renault hardly do any Friday running and will McLaren risk their engines? |

The usual Friday suspects are quickest so far, with Kubica topping the time sheets with a 1:30.281, ahead of Wurz on 1:31.987. Doornbos has a 1:32.884, and Davidson 1:39.342. Winkelhock, Jani and Ide have all recorded at least one lap.
As I type, it appears that Jani has stopped somewhere on the circuit in sector 2. |

It's interesting that Heidfeld doesn't complete a lap, but JV who should be nursing an engine that has already done one race, does 16 laps.
I'm not too sure how much can be read into the times. Currently, it's cool and very overcast here in Melbourne. I'm not sure whether that's going to be how it turns out on Sunday, but you would think that it might warm up just a tad (though perhaps not - you never know with Melbourne!). |

also interesting that Ralfyboy was 3rd fastest at one stage in the session, but he was not in the top 6 in any speed traps (from the F1 live timing) in any sectors - they must be running alot of wing on that toyota to compensate for the tyres, and me thinks they would be very worried about getting enough heat in the tyres for qualifying and he would have been light...
the ferraris and their derivatives (ie RBR) got into the top spots in the traps even when they were on their out laps... its a very torquey stop / go sort of track so they look like they've got plenty grunt and renault should be the same (not really uncovering any mysteries there though am i?...) |

I've heard rumour, that Jacques was pushing hard, because he'll have to change engine anyway.

Maybe something to that, as he's already done ten laps in the second session and is seventh fastest.

Second session was best, very hectic with all the race drivers participating now that the track was cleaner...Although my bloke went P1 two of his prime laps were baulked especially the last run, but loads of data aquired. Good job!

davidson and wurz were neck and neck for most of that session, with kubica doing a pretty decent job as well - the track was getting alot quicker towards the end, you're right rennen, davidson had quickest first sector on his first flying lap and got baulked - but then set the p1 lap straight after, so probably could have gone slightly quicker, but times are pretty indicative. Looked like wurz was lapping with race fuel & setup at that stage though (doing comparative times to webber with rosberg slightly behind in each sector - but he was learning a new track), but it was hard to tell because of traffic...
its quite cool here at the moment and looking like we're in for a bit of rain pretty soon, the bridgestones look better than expected... |

also interesting to see that Kubica was top o the pops in the speed trap at 299, JV 296, FA 295...
and in sector 3, a bunch of drivers clocked at 283, then KR fastest on 288! |

Hard to make much of top-speeds in practice though.

BMW seem to have issues. Is there any word on what they are?

No no you have that all wrong.
The engine still operates, its the Sauber chassis that sets the engine on fire |

Seems that they are taking Mc Laren's last year tradition. This would be the 2nd engine change for JV in 2 races. And his was not the only BMW engine to come into flames.
