SSEC Designer Challenge

All circuit designers welcome. The SSEC Designer Challenge is intended to help the SSEC find the great designers in hiding. The goal is to design a circuit that can fit within the parameters of the SSEC Circuit Guidelines, New Circuits Article.
  • The circuit is recommended to have a minimum of 72 pitboxes/garages to ensure the circuit can host an SSEC event.
  • The circuit is recommended to be long enough that the average gap between 72 cars is .1 sec. (long circuits are expected)
  • The circuit must have adequate safety measures in place to allow a prototype to safely dissipate energy in the event of a wreck.
  • Areas where stability may become lowered or where high g-loads are present should have run-off or gravel traps, depending on the speed and nature of the section.

Street circuits are permissible, but two prototypes must be able to run parallel for at least 90% of the track's length and no section longer than 1/2 mile may be narrower than such. We eagerly await your designers.

Design Tips

Just been thinking. A few good ways to design long circuits are:
  • Designing multiple grand prix circuits and connecting them
  • Make a really big oval, add infield sections, erase the underlying oval shape, and work from there
  • Use multiple overpasses to reduce the real estate footprint
  • Design a course, then make a long extension, then make a longer extension, until you feel good
  • On pit lanes, multiple can be used. This would allow for racing on multiple shorter circuits, and so pitting isn't an all day affair

Can't wait to see someone step up here on ten-tenths!

I would, but my computer doesn't like the thought. I'll try to make it work, but might be a few days.

Fortune Favors

I managed to cobble up a circuit. Not beautiful, but the point is made. If anyone could direct to an easier designing software that won't cost me, I'd love to hear it. For now, without appropriate run-off added, an example circuit, track in black and pit lane in red. (In PNG because the JPEG wouldn't work for some reason.)

Hi!
Is it there a specific terrain shape or size that you need to fit this idea?
Is it a free open design?
Is it there a google view that I can refer to?

Thanks, Luiggi

Anywhere, any terrain is good as long as it doesn't result in flying or bottoming out prototypes. (NB preferably stay out of the US and Japan)

Just thinking why this thread is here. So, I took the 2015 SSEC calendar, and replaced the track name with the designer(s) name(s)
  1. Life Design/Cain Circuit Design
  2. SSCC/Cain Circuit Design
  3. HP Design/Cain Circuit Design
  4. HP Design/Cain Circuit Design
  5. HS Circuits/Cain Circuit Design
  6. American GT Design/Cain Circuit Design
  7. SSC
  8. Life Design/Cain Circuit Design
  9. SSCC/Cain Circuit Design
  10. Force Track Design/Cain Circuit Design
  11. Blackbox Circuit Design/Cain Circuit Design
  12. HS Circuits/Cain Circuit Design
  13. GT United Design
  14. Criteria Design
  15. GT United Design/Cain Circuit Design
  16. Comité de Autodromo de Isla de Sentencia/Cain Circuit Design
  17. Cain Circuit Design*
* Lac Anosy listed because no new circuit has been revealed to host Round 17.

Notice a trend?

I did this track some time ago. Could it be a design suitable for the challange.

Here are some more images of the track.
The international track excluding the oval is 7.47km.
The international track can also be run with oval extension.
There are three different tracks within the design that can all operate at the same time: the green track(4.39km), the blue track(3.38km) and the oval(1.6km). There is a rallycross track(1.9km) incorporated into the blue track as well(rallycross loose sections in brown). A kart track (1.6km) can be found within the oval

The paddocks of the blue and green track can be accessed without having to cross the track. Spectator areas would be primarily found on the outside of the track. Run off/gravel traps are shown in grey. Track width is nominally 12 metres.

Been talking with the SSEC officials (actually to discuss the 2015 Nissan prototypes) and we decided to split the competition into classes.

General Challenge:
the above rules, otherwise unlimited

R17 Challenge:
the above rules, and has to be a street circuit in an African nation not afflicted with ebolavirus or bordering a nation afflicted with ebolavirus (excluding Algeria)

Oval Challenge:
dealing with tracks for the SSRS (which debuts in 2016), any place where the rules state 72, replace with 45. Further, tracks must use part of an oval course that is, in itself, usable as an oval course.

I'll submit my latest design

Post 60 of my 2014 thread

With the South circuit pitlane having a teams garage frontage of 340m, this should be plenty for the series. The Race control building next to it, has it's own garages for the weighscales etc.

Is the oval supposed to be banked?

It would have banking of about 15 to 20 deg. At the time I did it I had not figured out how to do curved banking with sketch up.

Its fairly easy to turn this into a 'true' roval just by lining up the banked corners and filling in the gaps, so I have done, to see how it looks: http://tentenths.com/forum/attachmen...5&d=1154643838

Tim
Assuming a pit lane would be added on the oval (presumably on the inside of a corner), that could be a Roval Challenge course.

NB Multiple entries per individual are acceptable, but maintain quality over quantity.
