Aston Martin/Mclaren?

This thread is about a rumour of a big Aston Sportscar project with McLaren involvement

Why would Aston Martin hire McLaren to build a LMP1?

Prodrive will enter F1 next season. They are rumoured to use the McLaren car and Mercedes engine.

I did hear a couple of months back that McLaren were considering an LMP, do we know for sure that its Aston Martin Racing and not Prodrive? If McLaren did want to build an LMP, a collaboration with Prodrive would make sense

I think McLaren and Prodrive are both capable of developing a prototype. They don't need each other.

It makes sense, much more than the possibility of taking Aston Martin into F1. Like Jaguar, Aston Martin would benefit much more from winning Le Mans than being in F1 in my opinion. They're a sportscar marque and winning Le Mans would be great for the brand.

Well very true, but it's got to help to join a team that knows what it's doing. Don't get me wrong, both teams are brilliant, i've worked at McLaren, I know. I just think you've got to have a better chance collaborating with a proven team in the category than going it alone. They don't want to join to make up the numbers, they're there to win

I agree.

This is one of they reasons I don't understand why Spyker bought the Midland F1 team.

I guess it just got them a Formula 1 entry, they just hoped they could buy the right people and move up the grid, I have no idea tbh

There is the rumored symbiotic relationship between McLaren and Prodrive for the F-1 entry, with a possible synergistic value for Prodrive/AMR in resources. Then you have the Richards AM-Prodrive connection. The only thing that AM people have stated is that they see no AM F-1 team, but that Sports Car racing will continue to be an AM activity, so it does make some sense.

To this point Prodrive, in essence, has been AMR.
With the purchase of AM that may change but we have heard nothing on that front yet.

How about:-

1). Prodrive F1 team with Mclaren chassis and Mercedes engines.

2). Aston Martin LMP1 team with chassis designed and built by Mclaren

No Mclaren branding, just a technical link up.

Prodrives activities tend to be based on production cars, I'm not sure they have the capability, in house, to build a carbon LMP1 or F1 chassis.

Prodrive runs AMR yes, i'm just thinking this will be a McLaren LMP with help from Prodrive (or vice versa i suppose), rather than a McLaren-Aston Martin LMP as was possibly suggested further up^^ Just because Prodrive own Aston Martin doesn't mean it will be an Aston, just like the F1 project is (apparently) Prodrive not Aston Martin

That was in response to HORNDAWG btw
And JAG I think the current rumours are exactly that, Prodrive team running McLaren-Mercedes cars, at least for the moment

Prodrive does not own Aston Martin. David Richards not Prodrive is a partner in the consortium that purchased Aston Martin!!!!!!

I imagine a prototype Aston Martin or Mc Laren with the ACO specifications of 2010 (roof...) ; this could be great !

Are Dennis and Ojjeh still the main shareholders of McLaren? Or is Mercedes the controlling shareholder nowadays?

Makes sense. With Mercedes factory driver Paffet joining the Prodrive F1 team. I think David Richards has denied AM will enter F1.

McLaren designing/building the LMP1, Prodrive running the car on track?

I am still not convinced why they need McLaren to build a LMP. If Creation, Zytek and Lucchini can build a LMP why can't Prodrive?

Sorry I am not very good at Intuiting via electronic devices!

The post that I quoted and responded to said nothing of Prodrive running AMR but in fact suggested that they were separate entities.

He has, the F1 project is all Prodrive. I think both Gary and Pedro are rumoured for race seats aren't they? We'll find out at the British GP
