Lotus identification help
I keep seeing a Lotus on my journeys to and from work, and would like to know what it is. It's old enough to need a black/silver numberplate, BRG, has a long bonnet and round headlights like an E-type, and an open cockpit with cage like a Caterham. I've looked on a couple of Lotusography sites, but haven't found it yet. I appreciate it's not much to go on, but any ideas?

Sure it's a Lotus? Sounds like nowt I've ever heard of but then I am by no means an expert. Could be that someone has stuck a Lotus badge on a cheap and nasty kit car.

Here's an odd thing.
I was thinking Maisie's description sounds close to a Ginetta kit, so I did a Google image search on "Ginetta" and ended up finding Lotuses (Loti??) here... http://www.jeffchan.com/cars/historics2001/index2.html There's even a green one... |

Isn't that a Lotus Eleven?

It definitely has the plectrum-on-a-gold-medal badge on the nose, but it doesn't look like the 11. It looks a little less sleek, and more mean. I did think Ginetta, but none of them look right either.

I think garcon's picture might be a 15 (the same car that David Heynes was killed at the GP).
The early full-bodied cars all had a developing shape with variations on the teardrop rear wings and (what I call) the 'flabby' nose design, until the 23, which was much tighter. So, Maisie, is garcon's picture, spot-on, or close? If it's not right, we can try higher, or if you can point out areas that are noot quite right, we can look more in the 8-20 range (by which time someone with the excellent Lotus Book, which has photos of every Type, might have turned up!) |

Hmm... not immediately. I can see I'm going to have to scrutinise the Lotus more carefully next time I see it!

Pictures would really help in this situation, i guess. Or you could just stop the owner and ask 'em what car it is!

Not quite - it's open to the air. Guess I'm gonna have to lurk at the roadside with a camera one morning!

Unfortunately, Maisie hasn't posted since November 2004; perhaps she did get locked up! It's a shame that we were unable to identify this mysterious car for her, or that she was unable to furnish us with a picture.
