driftwood has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Formula Libre racing

Formula Libre racing was active in the 1970`s until 1989 when the RAC deemed it in appropriate and limited single seater races to 2.5 litre engines and banned the word Libre
Until then any single seater car could race 1600 2 litre 3 litre F5000 all in 1 race for fun no real glory and sometimes sports cars or fast saloon cars raced as well but again open and closed/wheels cars cannot run on track at the same time anymore
Libre was an ideal event to run old/obsolete F1 F2 F3 atlantic cars cars that these days can race in historic races for their specific formula

Today its hard to find Libre races only Lydden and Mondello running "open " events and the Irish having no engine size limitations

Last year the Formula Free races attracted a good grid of formula cars for its 1st season before it was dispensed with

The obsolete "modern" cars now have specific formula championships to run in like BARC renault club F3 and Monoposto are open to obsolete cars but restricted on engine rules meaning old F3 cars race with non original motors

It would be good to have Libre racing again to allow any size engne car to run
The closest we get is HSCC DBT races with 1600 cars upto F1/F5000 cars allowed to race in the same race

The Irish lads will come to Anglesy (in April?) to race and that may be the closest the mainlanders will get to a true Libre race

The Peterborough Motor Club used to run a cracking Libre race at Silverstone. Everything from F1, F5000, Atlantics, Fords, Sports Cars and even the odd Saloon. The grid was generally full and very noisy

Someone here has a photo of Gerry Marshall leading at Brands in Baby Bertha!

Hi Driftwood, havnt heard from you in a while ... you were missed at the Irish Grand Prix last year!! Never mind, as Peter says, we've a big meeting on the long circuit to celebrate Mondello's 40th Anniversary on the 17/18 May, and anyone who fancies coming along will be very welcome.

The "Irish lads" are going to Anglesey on 5/6 July, and, again, anyone who'd like to run with us will b welcome

Formula Libre will be racing at Anglesey on the 4/5 July weekend, the event being run by the Leinster Motor Club. Not sure about any other events, but I'm sure that somebody will be along with more information...

Just a small update to Kevan's original post - it is now possible to race both modern (up to 2001 I believe, pre-sequential 'boxes) and older F3 cars in Mono using the original engines, albeit not necessarily with the original restrictor size (which means a remap).

At the moment the pre '93 F3 engined cars compete in the Mono 2000 Classic class, whilst later pre '01 F3 engined cars race in the Mono Formula class (possibly with recent Formula Renaults, if ever any join us (and they'd be quite quick).
