Mk1 Escort Race Drivers list 1968-75 ish

Hi ,ive been collecting mk1 escort pics for a while lol,
I been trying to collect as many period pics from 1968 -75 ish .
Circuit racers not rally .I have a large collection already ,as lots of the cars
were driven by different drivers and owned by different teams my first job
was to match drivers to the cars to help create the history of the cars and
where an when they raced using all the databases online .

I have lots of pics with no information at all .

The pics below show drivers i have listed already ,
would be great if anyone knows of any others drivers .
Ive had more luck finding pics of mk1s through driver history than
any other route.

Please feel free to verify and correct any spelling errors of names
also the country they are from .Some of the names are not full
as i could not find anymore details .

Anyway enough waffling lol ,any help would be great

cheers essy .

A lot of work has obviously gone into this list.

Chris Venter and Paul Stephenson, both East Yorkshire based, drove Escorts in the early 1970s as did Sue Tucker-Peake.

A quick look through some old results shows the following Escort drivers - mostly from the north of England or Scotland - to add to your list:

Norman Hodgson
Henry Tuer
David Wragg
Richard Martin-Hurst
Derek Huntley
S (Syd?) Williams
R (Ron?) McCutcheon
Ralph Bryans
Paul Haigh
Mike Smith
Zek Redjep

Then there were loads of Mexico Challenge drivers over the years.

Can't get it to edit. But it's Alex Slater, not Harry. Memory's a terrible thing.

Angus. My brother, Chris Wray, had a burgundy (well, Ford Capri aubergine) and silver Mk 1 Escort BDA in 1973/74 - not sure if that's the one you mean.

Did he spend most races at Croft with occasional forays to Ingliston?

IIRC Graham Hill raced an Alan Mann Escort in '68 or '69.

Others are Dave Garrett, Hannu Mikkola, Matti and Heikki Kemilainen (Gulf sponsored cars) and Peter Westbury (drove the Hamilton car in 1969).

Right time to start posting what pics i have .
Will do them in alphabetical order.
Im leaving all water marks intact and reducing image size so hope
its ok to post the pics .let me know if not.

Will post a driver at a time to give anyone a chance to add
any info regarding the driver .
Also any corrections of name spellings ,country they are from or if
they know the pics and driver dont match .

Add any info regarding the cars in the pics ,teams ,also car and team history
before and after the period photo was taken .

Just add whatever you like it all will build a picture and history of car and driver and make interesting reading .
Last of all add links or pics as well

There are the Irish ones as well... Mattie McNamara, Rosemary Smith, Fintan Newport, Vinnie Moy etc... If you need something more definitive I can probably dig out my old race programmes from back then and get a better list for you.

Have you checked out this thread by the way ?

Mk. 1 Escort drivers.

I remember we race against Barry Barnes in his #13 pink Escort Mk1. in the early eighties and when my man Peter Halls tried it on a test day was heard to have said , " I don't know how Barny drives it!" As when he went into Paddock at Brands full-chat and braked the steering wheel almost jumped out of his hands.
Good old Barny. RIP.
