GP2 Final Rounds Monza - Crunch Time! Race weekend thread
Well already the end of the season is upon us! Can't believe it really.
Pantano's a shoe in now in spite of scoring nothing for 3 out of the last 4 races but something tells me he's not going to do it!! Bruno made a hash of Spa and missed a massive chance to close the points deficit but I doubt he'll not score well here. However Grosjean, Maldonado, the Super Nova twins have all made a timely return to frontline form just to mix things up a bit. Both Campos drivers are capable of winning as are at least a half dozen other drivers! So who's your money on? How's it going to play out........ Last edited by chunterer; 11 Sep 2008 at 09:41. |

Well, my favourite for this weekend is Pantano, he's been so dominating on his homeground. I can't think anything that Senna could do to stop Giorgio from taking the title. Still, Pantano can make some mistakes similar to Spa and that opens the way for Senna. It's pretty much impossible that both, Senna and Pantano, would flop like they did in Spa but how awesome would that be if they'd do and Grosjean/Di Grassi would clinch the title? Talk about overhauling. For me, it's the same whoever wins the title, if Bruno does it, he's proven he's F1 caliber and he should finally be taken seriously as himself, not Ayrton's nephew. Well, if Pantano wins it, it seems like a waste considering he's nearly 30 - surely he's not gonna get to F1.
Piquet Sports duo Zuber and Maldonado are the black horses with Parente. If Pantano goes for title and not for the glory, then we'll most likely see Maldonado taking at least one win - and maybe pole, dunno. Parente's been doing good lately and good end for the season is what he deserves. And also Soucek, Campos duo, Grosjean and Buemi shouldn't be counted out. Interesting weekend of racing it seems and hopefully we'll get some rain again to shuffle things up - and maybe crown a surprise champion? Ps. BCN's situation is horrible, are they even gonna race in Monza? Valles has no money, Iaconelli is... well, Iaconelli. If they race, Monza can be the last stand of BCN in GP2, but hopefully not. It seems like a dead end for them, they don't have money or big sponsors, so they can't get talented drivers to get results... does anyone have any idea about their required budget? I think they charged 400 000€ for the 2nd half of the season in 2007 so whole season could be in region of 800-900 000€, am I correct? |

I would imagine BCN will see out the season and then either regroup or the assets will get taken over. There'll be no shortage of outfits wanting 'in'.
Yes, Maldonado or maybe Zuber could take a win here, they are both on form, Pastor is really on fire though. Are you sire about Di Grassi and Grosjean still being in with a shout of the title though? I thought title was now only between Giorgio and Bruno points wise? |

Isn't the maximum pot 20 points? If so, Grosjean/Di Grassi would end up in 73 as Pantano is now standing in 71 and Bruno in 60. So don't count them out yet. But seriously, it would take a miracle to get either of them through Pantano - if even that. So if there isn't huge mistakes by both Senna and Pantano and superb showing from either of those black horses, the champion is gonna be Senna or Pantano.
IMHO I'd like to see Pantano's face after race 2 "Yeah, I did it, I did it!" "Ummm, you lost the championship by 2 points to Romain Grosjean..." -> "What the...?!?" |

Yeah, it's a pity grosjean crashed in race 2 in spa because he had the pace to win it, which would have put still 12 points behind Pantano (i think) but still in the mix if something was to happen to Giorgio in race 1.

Valles will not be at Monza.
BCN with only one car (for the moment). http://www.italiaracing.net/notizia.asp?id=20545&cat=4 |

Crash.net suggests Salvador Duran could step in at the last minute for BCN.

Mika Salo and Jean Alesi have been wandering around the paddock, maybe..?
Seriously, I think it's either one car or Iaconelli-Duran. BCN's email adress seems to be offline or something, all the mails return? But looking at the weather right now and reading the weather predictions, it's either gonna be huge circus or no driving this weekend. We'll see, if it rains and GP2 races, hmmm. |

It's one car for BCN.
And the weather was apocolyptic before free practice, which was delayed for an hour. Of course, it's steaming hot and sunny now. |

Would BCN have any penalisation in case they present only one car???
Shame that Scalabroni didn't think about Guerrieri on this last round, with a seat avaliable until the last minute. That could helped him easily to fill it. |

No, they're not going to get "penalisation" this weekend, but it's pretty likely that whether they drive one or two cars in Monza, they're still going to be either kicked out or relegated to GP3 or something. BCN's situation doesn't look very great, they need Telmex/Lukoil next year or they're doomed.

It's settled then, congratulations to Giorgio Pantano for 2008 GP2 title!
Of course it's not 100% sure yet, but Senna needs to take 14pts more than Pantano in two races and the max. amount of points is 18 now. So if Senna takes all from this point forward and Pantano doesn't score more than 4 points... well, rain can change things, but unlikely to favor of Senna. Results anywhere, I missed the broadcast? |

Well thanks a bunch Giorgio. Talented bloke that you are and all that, you've gone half way to ruining the spectacle of the title decider!!
And Bruno, have you given up or something. 12th man, what's the matter with you?!!! How inconsiderate..... Anyone want to add some meat to the bones about the rest of the grid? Last edited by chunterer; 12 Sep 2008 at 18:09. |

And Chandhok, who I think doesn't particularly like being looked upon as #2 to Senna. is 10th The race could be interesting.

What's going on with Arden all of a sudden? They've both qualified well. And Parente, what was wrong with him? |

As noone's requested a 'no info pls' until after the race I can tell you that it's shaping up nicely.
Pantano is slipping about and has gone over the kerbs at Turn 1 3 times, Di Grassi and Maldonado follow and Buemi has just towed up behind them. It was an SC start and is now gradually drying out, so whilst it's 'greasy' it may well dry out enough to make it difficult for people to choose tyres at their pit stops. Filippi was a sort of guinea pig and is not in the zone yet but his times are coming down. 11 left and most people haven't stopped yet..... oh hang on, Senna and D'Ambrosio just have... |

I was just about to ask about Pantano's crossing of the white line when coming out of the pits... I seemed to be the only one who saw it (the commentators didn't say a thing) - but he's just been penalised for it, so I guess my question is redundant! All enjoying the race?
