22 for 2008

On F1-LIVE their is a story about 22 teams entered for 2008 with the FIA to drop that number back to 12 teams.

The question I have is why only 12 teams, why not 16 or 17 teams that would be 32 to 34 cars and imagine what that would look like on the TV.
What is you the people opinon about this.??????????????????????????????

I think they could have 22 teams.

44 cars on the grid.

Most of the new tracks you could have grids 4 cars wide.. the cars looked so stupid on the grid at sepang ... the track is 20 cars wide, and just 2 lines of cars.

Yeah, just like in the old days (early 90s!), there were 30 to 35 entries and people DNPQ'd and DNQ'd. I think there should be no prequalification though, and everyone should be allowed into qualifying. You'd get a chance to see all cars through two days.

44 cars will be too much in my opinion on 1 track. Imagine qualifying, what a hassle it would be to follow all cars. And we will probably have many similar liveries.
It would be a difficult task for Max & Co to refuse 10 of the teams.

Atleast with 44 drivers, there certainly wouldn't be single lap qualifying...

You can't have 44 cars on track in an open wheel series as fast as F1, not ideally anyways.

Hence it won't happen.

While you can't have 44 cars on track at once now when you have the option of more 22 is to few. I personally can't see anything wrong with 30 drivers/15 teams. A good round number & it would be exciting to watch

44 cars on the entrylist could be excellent, but considering the FIA they could allow about 15/16 teams instead 12 in the F1 world.
Of course they would put a limit of 26 qualifyers if they allowed 30+ cars; last time when they did it was in the International F3000 during years 1999 (42 cars) and 2000 (30 cars).

Well if you have a limit of 26 cars, you ain't gonna get 22 teams attempting to qualify, people won't turn up to go home on Friday, not these days anyways!

Isn't there a rule that there can only be two drivers per team? Certainly would be unorthadox.

As I understand it, all entries simply express a wish to enter. Of the 11 teams above the current teams, I suspect that a number of these teams are speculative in the hope that they can raise the (reduced) money in time. However, I would imagine that there is no guarantee that all of the current teams will be granted entries as the FIA may decide that, say, a Penske team (assuming that they're on the list) portrays a better image than Midland or Super Aguri.

Don't forget Mosley's suggestion of promotion/relegation between F1 & F2 - 22 teams in total would be enough for 2 leagues.

Why have the maximum numbers dropped from 26 to 24 anyway?

I'd say have a maximum of 30 cars, and drop 4 cars after saturday qualifying for a 26 car grid. For those who don't make the grid, it should be either unlucky or an incentive to work harder.

I like to see high grid numbers, but not in single-seaters, it's just too dangerous.

Agreed Bob, the paddock probably doesn't have room for the modern facilities of more than about 15 teams. GP2 would have to be fundamentally changed for the promotion/relegation idea to work, and the result would be too expensive to fulfill the main purpose of that championship.

I think that the way qualifying is now with the shootout system will make having more than 24 entries viable.

What I'd like to see is a 26 car grid like they used to have.

Then I'd say whoever has the means to enter a team should be allowed, even if you have some one car teams. Of course teams arent going to want to enter if tehy're going to DNQ every race but the knockout system should hopefully ensure that upsets will happen and these samller teams get to race. Also the amount of traffic at the start of the knockout sessions would leave a little bit more unpredictability.

I think there is potential here to open up the number of entries. However having said that I have no idea how serious these unknown entries are and whether they have the necessary means to even get on the back of the grid. But if they do, at least it will give the small teams something to fight for. And if the sport becomes more affordable these guys at the back will have even more of an incentive to push and close the gap.

Well in the late 80's and early 90's when there was over 30 cars, some teams had only 1 car.
Fondmetal & Coloni in 1991 (i think) were the last ones to do it.

Well... at International F3000, at the beggining of 1998 season, there were races with enormous grids: Imola race had 35 cars behind starting line! Some events like Pau or Monaco had some DNQs, but it was in 1999 when they imposed again the limit of 26 qualifiers for a race.

It was like that for two or three years I recall.

My point is about pre-qualifying......if you only have 26 cars allowed to start then it is unlikely that three million teams will turn up to races when chances are they won't get in the race. I just don't think that is sustainable nowadays, if it ever was!

But it's a moot point, because we won't have any surplus teams and, therefore, no pre-qualifying.

Anyone care to take an educated guess at who the eleven potential new teams are, obviously Minardi and Prodrive, also Penske keeps cropping up, i wonder if Irvine has got in there with his russian money.
