HANS device fitting
I have got a new HANS device and I need it fitting before the festival next week. Demon Tweeks and Grandprix racewear are not allowed to touch them on the orders of BELL Europe. But BELL Europe want to charge over £200 just to fit the clips..... Demon Tweeks and GPR only charge £50
BELL are just cashing in and I will not buy another BELL helmet when I get a new one. Does anyone know who else will fit them in the UK? Regards RR77 |

If the crash helmet doesn't have the correct label to match the fact it has (or can have) the hans thingies on it then the more observant scrutineer will impede it and you won't race.
Sorry, don't what the label details are, just had several chats with several scrutineers. |

How old is the helmet. If it is a new helmet and already has the holes for the hans post predrilled then DT should be able to fit as we are not modifying the helmet. Bell have strictly prohibited dealers from drilling helmets for Hans hence the problems, but i pretty sure we can fit if the helmet is predriiled by them. Dave |

Is there any modifications required to the seating position in a single seater to "make room" for the use of a HANS system ?.
Should the headrest be moved back a little and the seat back packed forward a little to provide some room, or are Hans helmets "flat backed". ?. |

Hi - I know this is an old thread but have just bought a Hans device and now find Bell want to charge me £200 for fitting the posts to a one year old helmet with predrilled holes - anyone know who can do this in the UK
Thanks |

I had the same dilemma a few weeks ago. DT would not fit them, as rules changed last september that only Manufacturers of the helmet can fit posts whether the helmets are pre drilled or not.
My posts were fitted by Phoenix (Arai UK) sent over to Holland for the FIA sticker, cost 140 inc all postage costs. Bell are taking the **** with their figure of £200 though. Last edited by RF_Racer; 23 Feb 2009 at 20:01. |

I would sell the helmet and buy a new one with Hans posts fitted, it would probably work out the same if you have to pay £200.00 for fitting the Hans posts.

Thanks for the help guys - in the end i managed to get the spreader plate between the lining and the helmet case quite easily - once the holes were lined up it was quite an easy task - can't see how Bell can justify £200 for a half hour job that has no impact upon the integrity of the helmet - OK i don't have a sticker so I cant race FIA with it - hey ho chance would be a fine thing !

As has been mentioned unless you are doing FIA events you don't need the sticker and hence can fit the posts yourselves (assuming its already been pre-drilled!)

It would be more helpful if you look in the following places for info
1) The Blue Book 2 Appendix L to the FIA International Sporting Code These are the places to get the definitive answer to these questions If Bell (or anyone else) is telling you that only they can fix the tether posts, refer them to appendix L, where it only states: 3. Head restraint 3.1 The wearing in an international event of any device intended to protect the head or neck and attached to the helmet is prohibited, unless the device has been homologated by the FIA and listed in FIA Technical List n° 36. When the device used is the HANS®, it must be worn only with a compatible helmet appearing in Technical List n° 29. Drivers are strongly recommended to use helmets with tether-anchorages fi tted by the manufacturer as original equipment. These helmets are identifi ed by a glossy silver holographic FIA label as illustrated in FIA Technical List n° 29 - Figure 1. It is also strongly recommended to use homologated tethers which are identifi ed by an FIA 8858-2002 label sewn on them. The ISC and all appendices is available as a pdf from www.fia.com |

Hey thats really useful information and as a lawyer the "strongly recommended" to my understanding, that means that for self fitted hans posts should be acceptable even for FIA events (subject of course to a discussion with the apprpriate scrutineer) Having us believe that it is mandatory for the helmet manufacturer fit them and apply the appropriate sticker (assuming the helmet is pre drilled of course) could be seen as a restrictive/anti competitive issue under EU law. Unless i am mistaken of course........

In my opinion, if you are going to compete, know the regulations that apply to your chosen competition.
I have had too many run-ins with scrutineers who would not let me race because of my tinted visor, or told me to lose the badges on my race suit by the next race. They don't like it when you ask them to show you where in the blue book it says you cannot have a tinted visor (it only says they should be neutral density, and I carry an OED definition of that at every race) or when you point out the FIA regs regarding embroidery and badges on race suits only apply to embroidery stitched directly onto the garment, and all that bagdes have to comply with is that the backing material must be flame retardant and the thread used must be also flame retardant. The stitching of badges onto a race suit can go through all of the layers so long as it complies. I know, very sad, but I am alos an official as well as a competitor!! |

Hey really appreciate the advice and have taken the opportunity of printing off the relevant FIA pages (as per your note). Unfortunately I couldn't find anything in the latest blue book regarding hans devices so your reference was very helpful. Luckily I've never had a scrute tell me I couldnt race because of something or other in around 15 seasons. Am i lucky ?
Once again thanks for the guidance John Mawdsley Quote:

Before spending a large amount of cash, please check that your harness mounting points are in the correct location for use with the Hans device, otherwise you will be spending even more cs getting them noved, or you will have a very expensive paperweight

My sholder belts are the wraped stragigh onto the role cage. Would this affect the operation of the hans device at all?
Sorry for the daft questions. This is the first year that I'm running the hans device. |

The important (and regulated) bit is the angle the belts make from the shoulders back to the anchor points. Different angles are specified for saloons, single seaters and so on. IIRC all the details are on the FIA website.
