I think they're intermediates for these does appear to be a faint tread pattern on them.

There is no doubt that the tyres on the red bull in the other forum's photos are slicks, they must have found a loop hole somewhere that enables them to carve out a groove & call them inters, which seems somewhat lame but quite clearly obvious

It would also be pointless. They're intermediates.

how do you come to that conclusion.there far from being the inters i saw being used this year & if they are inters what would you prefer to be running, a tyre so close to the old slicks it's not funny or the grooved tyres they have to use now, far from being pointless.

We've seen this before in testing. An inter at speed looks very much like a slick (sometimes it's because they become slick).

I wouldn't think that any of the teams would run slicks if they need to know how the grooved tyres work!

They probably used the inters to clean up the track.

They quite often do it for the low temperatures. IIRC, track temperatures were in the single figures (celcius) which wouldve been outside the operating temperature fairly considerably for Melbourne spec tyres.

You can well imagine that despite a cold track, a lack of moisture would cause high tyre wear for the inters, leading to them degrading to slicks quite quickly.

There is a distinct pattern on the Red Bull's tyres. And look at the link in the initial post of this thread and look along the "top" of the rear tyres. A definate shape where the grooves are.

Mate, I've got that pic as my desktop and they're inters. You can see the tread pattern. Running inters for a couple of laps seems to be something teams do in testing, it's nothing new.

EDIT:Here's a hi-res version, have a close look at the tyres, you can just make out the tread, particularly on the front tyre closest to us.

I think that the non-groove tyres are now positively and without a doubt inters.

Let's move on shall we!

I must sat however that it's a shame that Bridgestone didn't take a few of their GP2 tyres along for comparison.

I read somewhere that teams run inters on occasion to simulate drying track conditions. I assume this is to test how well they hold up when the track dries out and they start to get hot.

And how much better do slicks look? I mean I admit that from a distance that Red Bull pic with inters looks like slicks, and they look so much better to me than the stupid grooves.
