N.A-D.R should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Toyota Racing Series 2009

The season starts tomorrow, which is great. This series produces great racing, which has a field of young kiwi and aus drivers, also now attracting European and Asian drivers. I only really watch it because of one of the drivers, but it's still great to watch!

For 2009 there are some new drivers in the field and also some from 2008 doing another season. Will be a good season for sure.

Was a really competitive series a few years ago when I was there, but heard last year was a little less well supported. Fantastic opportunity for European drivers to get some great off season experience. Good condensed series with lots of competetive racing within a short time. Are they still running an international series within it?

Scott Pye dominated practice and qualifying 1, and Nathan Antunes did the fastest time of the weekend to grab pole for qualifying 2. more results to follow. It's a shame only 7 or 8 cars for round 1, hopefully more will come down for round 2.

i reckon their will be quite alot more for round 2, because i believe round 1 has had problems for which track would be for round 1. but never mind.

race 2 is taken by Nathan Antunes. This is Nathan's first TRS win. He has won by 7.3 over mitch Cunningham. There was also a safetycar during the race, but Nathan Antunes was to fast for everyone. http://www.mylaps.com/results/showrun.jsp?id=1018937

Race 3 will be a rippa with Scott Pye on pole with Nathan Antunes starting 2nd.

Two years ago at the A1GP Taupo support race I remember there were between 15-20 entries for TRS. Is the economic gloom hitting this series hard?

Will Stevens in EU KF2 champion for 2007 and Buller raced for Fortec in FBMW EU, had a solid season for a 15 years old. They are probably getting ready for F.Renault for this season.

Will Stevens was signed up to the Honda F1 driver development programme last year. I think they are both going to compete in next year's FR UK ch'ship with Fortec. Both of them raced with Fortec this winter in the UK and Portugal, with good results.

I don't know much about the Toyota Series, are the cars pretty much similar to FR?

Yes, both build by Tatuus and looking so similar that I wonder if they share the same tub.

FF has a couple of big spenders in the class. The result is that the cost of competing with them has escalted the costs of running FF so its had a detrimental effect on the numbers this season.

Perhaps there needs to be som restriction on how much testing and information technology the class is allowed to balance things out a bit.

It is unlikely those competitors will be around for the long term as they ahve goals and the money to progress further so next season may not be like this season, despite the downturn.

NZ can afford both in the long term. In fact it needs both.

It looks like wings and slicks categories are dying in the Australia/New Zealand region.

New Zealand Toyota Racing Series only 9 cars.

Australian Formula Three only 4-7 cars.

Something needs to be done. Or is it just inevitable with the way the economy is at the moment...

The region produces some of the best open wheel drivers in the world, but Formula Ford seems to be the only category that is thriving.

Do we just not have the $ in the region to sustain more than one professional open wheel category??
