Leigh Diffey coming home?
Talking to some Trans Am people in the US. I asked them what has happened to Leigh Diffey as he was calling their races on SPEED. All of them said they did not know. The other day on SPEED News , it was anounced that Leigh was going back to Australia.

That'd be good, I always quite liked him.

I hope he comes back to call the V8's. The duo of Bill Woods and Neil Crompton do a good job but they need a main commentator like he was.

He might be coming back to Australia, lets just hope it's not back to the commentary box!

i am from america, and i am very upset Leigh is leaving! he was THE BEST sportscar commentator we have ever had in over 10 years. Maybe you guys have better guys in oz, but alot of americans(including myself) are very upset over his departure. Leigh is very good, he knows his facts, and does a good, professional job at it. maybe he has changed since he was doing V8 commentary for you guys..

I can just see it now, The big Beefsteak and the Diff together in a sound proof box, now what a match! To some it could be as sweet as box of Darryl Lee's!

I actually thought Leigh was OK . Bathurst 1997 was one of his better calls.... A Crompton/Diffey commentary team would work well.
Get rid of "Clueless Woods" from the commentary box, put him in a large room where he can fit his big head and DO NOT let him near a microphone!! Maybe let Woods anchor the telecast, but please don't let him try and call the action |

What planet are you guys on...
I think we are way too critical of our commentators. To my mind Diffey overcame his natural exuberance to become a pretty informed commentator. No wonder the yanks love him as he would be a cut above most of their guys - former racers included. I don't think we have too much to complain about here on Ch 10. Bill Woods is remarkably good for a generalist, certainly miles in front of the recently departed Matthew White. Also I think Greg Rust is pretty competent as was Grant Denyer. As for the ex-racers; no complaints re Crompton and I think that Beattie has improved out of sight. Now if they could just give "occasional interviewer" Mick Doohan some pointers - he really is cringe material at present, unfortunately. |

I though leigh was a great commentator , yes he yells and screams a bit but thats just his enthusiasm for the sport.
I also met him once and found him to be a really nice guy. i'd welcome him back thats for sure |

I thought he was pretty good realy, sure he gets a bit carried away sometimes but all in all he is quite well informed and has done a good job.
That guy that replaced Grant Denyer doning the reports I finmd far more offensive, unless i am way more intelligent than the target audience of the V8's |

I am sure Leigh is a nice fella. Maybe he has matured while in the US.
I reckon that the top shelf US commentators (the guys who did Indy in the early to mid nineties) were just awesome with their background knowledge, professional and slick throws from one to another, absolutely no stumbles, just awesome. I watched Indy 95 four times in a row just to savour the commentary. If any of that has brushed off on Leigh, then I will welcome him back. But if not, then he is in the Darryl Whatsisname category. |

Have any of you knockers ever tried this gig? I'd reckon not. Its not easy!! And yes, I know, they get paid to do it so they should do it well. However, its fair to say that if they (Diffey, Darryl, et al) were so universally bad, they wouldn't last long.......

No. He had never driven a car before he started commentating. He did a story on himself a few years ago before he went to the US to "conquer the world", and he made it clear he simply was persistent and asked people if he could help out, and one day got a gig because someone was sick or something like that. |

Leigh used to come back and do the GP for GP TV here in Melbourne. All i can say is that he must have enjoyed the the US way of life as he certainly is different compared to what he was when he lived here in .au
cheers, dave |

I haven't done it before, but I know a guy who does stuff on Speedweek as an expert commentator. He says it is hard (for him anyway). He has to do it cold without any practice beforehand and is only thinking about one word ahead of his mouth. The pros edit and study the video before he comes in and calls it with them, so they have an idea what to say. I reckon my friend does a good job considering. You're right about the "pro's" studying video and editing. During the 2002 AROCA race at Eastern Creek the gear lever in my car came adrift from the shift mechanism as I was braking into turn 2. I managed to keep the car off the wall and parked it just past the sand trap. SBS were filming the race for Speedweek and when I watched the coverage a couple of weeks later the camera had caught me heading off the circuit and around the sand trap at which time the commentators got all excited and declared that it looked like I had a gear selection problem. Which of course they could not possible have known at that time - I told them later during an interview!!!! |
