In theory the layout in the top picture would be better.
The reason being that the inlet area at the front of the car diverges into a larger area over the engine intakes. This will lead to the speed of the air coming in at the front slowing down in the airbox. Bernoulli's principle says that if you slow the speed of the flow you increase the pressure at the same time, therefore the pressure on top of the inlet trumpets (or whatever lies within the 'black box') will be higher than at the airbox inlet at the front of the car. This will obviously increase the breathing potential as it is a mild kind of forced induction. As the amount of divergance in the setup shown in the lower picture is less, the decrease in speed, and therefore the increase in pressure, will be less. |

My untrained thoughts....
Each would have its advantages and disadvantages depending on the car being installed onto (eg look at the exhaust location on the top picture). I would suspect that the top picture would suffer from heat buildup while stationary from the exhaust headers. And might not have and ideal approach angle for the throttle bodies. While the bottom photo allows access to the throttle bodies for adjustment, and a injectors/spark plugs. The entry of the bottom one could also be 'moved' depending on the location of radiators, etc to get a cleaner air intake. Depending if they both have air filters or not, the top one would appear to allow a larger panel type air filter to be used, while the bottom would use a pod or cone style to be used. Happy to educated by trained opinions though. Paul BTW Bevan, I finally used those crimpers, and connectors - pure gold. |
