MG Metro 6R4 POWER
Over the last 18 years the Metro 6R4 has been in use throughout Rallycross since the Group B rally ban. In national rallying there have 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0 litre versions run. Group B Rally 3.0. In rallycross 3.0, 3.5, 3.6, 3.8 NA versions and 2.3 and 2.8 bi-turbo engines. As far as I know the 2.5 (multi Plenium) , 2.8 (single plenium) and 3.0 (single plenium)clubman's engines all produce no more than about 300bhp. The group B rally 3.0 410bhp, Rally X 3.0 450bhp and the 2.3 biturbo Rally X 700bhp. With all this development can someone tell me the power output's of all the other's I listed above? It would appear that the only tuners of the engine is Goodmans?

Lawrence Gibson's current 3.5 Goodmans powered 6R4 certainly had 520bhp in 2003 and has more this year......i did hear of figures closer to 600bhp when at the opening weekend of the British Champs in Ireland.
Steve Palmar's 3.8 Goodmans 6R4 was producing around 500bhp back in 1991 and Denis Biggerstaff bought it off him and won the British Champs with it in either '93 or '94. Regarding the 2.8 BiTurbo, this was built by a guy called Dagfin Laursen i think and then raced by Swede, Bengt Wiklund. I remember it racing at Croft in '92 at a European Masters invitation event and with croft being so fast then, apparently it was running with 840bhp on full boost. Also Denis Biggerstaff ran a 3.0 rallycross version in the very early '90's with only around 400bhp before he purchased Steve Palmer's 3.8. Will Gollop's 2.3 BiTurbo is still being used in hillclimbing and sprints and has around 750bhp. |

Pretty tricky to get that power out of a V64V, can't imagine Lawrence has got any more than 500 brake.
The peak of development was by Goodmans on Palmers engine and he never quoted more than 500 bhp, but with massive torque. Larsen made two BiTurbo Metro's. His was only a 2.3 that went on to Finnish driver Jorma Kovanen and the Wiklund car was originally raced by a superb Norwegian driver called Arne Rasmushaugen. He nearly won a few rounds with it but struggled to keep tyres on the thing, as did Gollop until he switched to Proflex suspension and other handling mods. Also, I seem to remember Tore Bratlie driving a BiTurbo for a while before he got an RS200, think I saw him at Brands one year. Palmer famously sold his motor before a meeting at KNockhill, then used a Clubman's spec unit there and got far too close to Welch in the final, great driveing. ALso remember Barry Hathaway won the Lydden title in a club spec car. Is LAwrence using Dermot's old car as that was a 3.5 when he got rid of it, or maybe Haffey's old one. WOuld be rgeat to keep track of all these cars, like Shields, Flahrty's, Morten Andersens, John Fernandes, Brodie Branch, Richard Hutton, Tom Bissett, all these guys had 6R4's, where are they now? |
