Pug 205 GTi?

Hi all.

Finally going to look at a suitable trackday car, its a 205 GTi.

Now i've seen a few of these out on the track and they seem quite good starter fun.

Has anyone got one or has experience of them? I have never driven one and know nothing about Pugs....only Rover Turbo's!

The car in question is a 88 1.9 GTi. It has safety devices cage, lowered, buckets and harness and comes with wets and slicks, its also road reg'd. Price is about a grand.

What does everyone think? Any advice or links welcome.

Sounds like a good deal. Many people are buying them for trackdays as they are one of the best handling FWD cars out there, and very cheap for the Miles-per-Smiles factor.

www.autofive.co.uk are a good place to get parts for them.

they get discounts for members on parts, insurance, do group buys eg Quaiffe lsd and have cheap trackdays.
You can use 11265 as a referral number if you join (that is my membership number).
There is a wealth of knowledge on there and some serious track cars.

I used to own a 205 GTI 1.9 in the mid 90's and it was without doubt the most fun best handling FWD car I owned, in a different league handling wise to various other hot hatches I owned including a Mk 2 Golf GTi & Astra GTE 16V.

Never took mine on track but I would imagine they are great fun.

Ive been in a 1.9 205 GTi and I too have got to admit it is a great handling little car, with a decent ammount of power (130bhp). Eddie, a 205 GTi is a great car and u really cant go wrong with it. If however ur looking for ultimate handling at a cheap price (maybe a tad more expensive than a 205 GTi, but not by much) go for a MK1 Toyota MR2, they are extrmeley light and as we all know mid engined and will just about outhandle anything else out there, barring Elises, VX220's etc. Not bad on power too, 120bhp I beleive, pretty good for a 1.6. Have a look on autotrader.co.uk - theres loads of them about for a reasonable price.

Have you bought a 205 Gti yet ?, I would be interested to know how you get on and how much you expect to spend. Im also looking for a 1991-1992 1.6 Gti im hoping to find a standard and solid car for under £700. Let me know how you get on.

Hi, just got round to replying!

Nope didn't go down the 205 route in the end, looked and was impressed, but decided to stick with what i know well.

got myself an ex works Rover Turbo Tomcat, last raced in the Super Coupe cup.

Very Quick car in a straight line, and enjoying it.

Great bits of kit, track-club have one planned for the fleet of track car hire cars, will probably be one of the cheapest cars on the fleet. A few other classics as well though....Golf Gti, Clio Williams and then the usual pricier stuff.

One thing to bear in mind with the Pugs. A 1.6 version isn't actually that different speed wise but is a lot easier to take racing if you so decide in the future. It's a lot harder to get into a competative cateory with the 1.9.
