Does anyone know if they have really solved the overheating problem? or because is just the track have so much straight, it can easily cool down the engine.

It is a 'device' they can add or remove depending on circumstances.

It's on both sides today for qualifying.

Are you allowed to change that between final Q and the race?

I suppose it's just something they're still experimenting with - I don't know - would the aero be adversely affected by having an outlet there? It might destablise the flow of air over the winglets and the rear wheels...

It's probably not needed except to cure long term reliability problems which is why it isn't seen in friday quals. I don't think it would disturb airflow over other parts. Ferrari is to miticulous to allow that

it never seems to be around for very long.
Sometimes in Barcelona, you saw it, and sometimes you didnt. Im not 100% sure of what the case was with Barichello's car, but MS had the ducts on the right side only, in the race...i think. |

Last check with pictures from Austria, they have the vents on both sides..
I believe that the appearance of the vents are there as an assurance to solve some reliability problems like overheating. It would affect aerodynamics at least a little won't it? But maybe the trade-off is worth it? |

It will be interesting if differnet races/temperatures will cause them to run with out the vents. |

i dont think the cars have to be symetrical. BAR have been using an assymetrical car lately.
In Brazil at least, they used different heat exhausts on the sidepods. Since the oil and water radiator are on the left and right respectively, the cooling requirements are different. So next time you see a BAR parked in the street, take a geez. |

Willaims use uneven exhaust vents. I can't see how it works, but I guess it must.
