New track for NSW?
Yesterday (November 8) the Land and Environment Court of NSW convened in Raymond Terrace courthouse after the cheif justice and a commissioner spent the morning inspecting the site of a proposed racing complex (circuit, drag strip and speedway oval) in an area known as Balickera, about 12km north of Raymond Terrace.
Yesterday afternoon's hearing dealt with geomorphological evidence from experts hired by both Port Stephens Council and Motorplex, the development company which initiated the legal challenge against council. The hearing moved to Sydney today and is expected to finish today with a decision due either late next month or early in 2007. Developer Peter Lee, for Motorplex, says if the court decision is favourable work will start ASAP and he expects to have cars racing by the end of 2008. Personally, I wish Mr Lee and the landowners, the MG Car Club of Newcastle, every success and hope the Court finds in their favour. They deserve it. We deserve it. |

Fantastic - first I've heard of Motorplex and this plan. With Perich's new track things are looking good.

I heard about this with the MG Car club a few years ago. Was waiting to see what was going to happen... this is great news!

Great news if it happens. Keep your fingers crossed.
Heard a couple of funny stories about one of the resident group members against the proposed race track. Apparently he was making a lot of fuss about the noise he reckoned the race cars would make but couldn't hear a smoke alarm going off in his own home! Another one (might even have been the same bloke) was claiming the track would do shocking ecological damage but wrote to the local paper a few days ago saying he was a big supporter of nuclear power. Finally, it seems the nearest houses are a couple of kilometres away from where the track will be with a hill between them. At some stage the MG car club guys got a supercharged V8 drag racing sedan on site, revved the engine and clocked 115 decibels at 30 metres. Other members were near the houses, also with a decibel metre, to record the output. Apparently someone had to ring them on a mobile to tell them the drag car was running. It didn't measure on their metre. |

Reminds me of all the dramas when we set up Speedway Park in Virginia SA in 1978
IIRC, AIR had a noise exemption but when our application was approved by the council/courts, we ended up with a 10 30pm curfew and 105dba at 10 metres from edge of track. Good luck but I suspect EPA will have rules that will be over-bearing and stifling!! Mike |

Another funny story abouot the resident group against the race track development. The MG Car Club has been running a hillclimb there since Adam was in nappies.
Also, a motocross track and a bike speedway track are very close by and have also been there for yonks but most of the locals didn't know. They'd never heard them! |

Good luck guys, i hope this goes well. We in Qld would love you to have another track we can come down and try and Raymond Terrace is 2 hours closer than Sydney, YAY!
It never ceases to amaze me, the short sighted ignorance and stupidity of the NIMBYs and the "thou shalt not" fraternity. |

This is FANTASTIC news for NSW motor racing. Our three main (or only) circuits are Wakefield, Oran Park, and Eastern Creek, and with OP set to go in the near future we will have a serious lack of racing venues. If we get this new track, and the other one planned, it can only mean good things for racing in NSW.
I'm fully behind the guys, let's hope a decision goes our way and we can begin racing at new and exciting tracks. |
