I can't help at all on this one. You seem to have everything that I've got (plus lots more).
The B15B was a different car, presumably. |

Terry McGrath - Chevron B15
My father co-run a team called Concross Racing and they ran Terry McGrath in a few Lombank and Libre races. Results show he was in a B15 but my father recalls the car was originally purchased as a B9 and was converted by the factory. I have the original purchase invoice somewhere, I'll locate it and verify with the chassis number.
The car ran in Ecurie Ecosse Blue (the team also ran an ex Ecosse D-Type "MWS 302" in Historics / Libre thus the colour) but changed this to a dark red/burgundy with a gold stripe running down the middle. The car was sold on to Geoff Bremner. Would love to know if anyone has any recollections or photos??? Robert Last edited by Robert Bruce; 14 Apr 2008 at 16:33. |

Robert, welcome!
I'd be very interested in the confirmation of this. I have McGrath's B15 as chassis 17, delivered in Aug/Sept 69. This comes from an ex Chevron employee and his data is reliable. I believe it was sold to Geoff Bremner in 1970. If it was converted from a B9 there weren't many it could have come from as most had a life in 69-70. Maybe one of the Red Rose cars, only one of which I can trace in 1969, or the mysterious Henry McLoughlin car which hardly raced in F3 but certainly existed. However, looking at Chevrons single seaters across FB/FC and F3 in 1969 some [or one] of the B9s must have made it to the USA because there don't seem to be enough B14s and 15Bs to explain them. I might try and chart this next week and see what explanations people can offer, as there weren't that many Chevron single seaters around in 1969 [9 B9s, most in Europe, 3 B14s, 14 B15s all in Europe, 7 B15Bs all in USA. I have located the original purchase invoice and it maybe a surprise to you that it was chassis No12 purchased on 12/08/69. My father arranged the purchase through Peter Gethin (as you can see on the invoice). The engine was aparently an ex Ronnie Peterson unit.
I have another invoice from Chevron dated 11/09/69 which is a rebuild after Terry McGrath had shunted during a test at Brands. A further rebuild was necessary after he put it in the lake at Mallory Park on the opening lap of the Lombank Championship round on 12/10/69, unfortunately I don't have a copy of the bill for that one. My elder brother can clearly recall pulling soaking weeds out of the suspension whilst the car was loaded on the trailer after the shunt. There was a few photographs of this at the time but our copies have been long lost. Does anyone have any idea if this chassis still exists and if so it's whereabouts? Robert |

Thanks!! That's the kind of hard information I like to see. According to the Autosport ad from Sept 79 which gave the chassis number and 'ex Gethin' description it was then in Scunthorpe. Any ideas from the hillclimb/sprint fraternity, or those who frequented Cadwell libre races about who this might have been ? Chris |

Chevron B15B
I don't think this warrants a separate thread but let's see how it goes. Six of these cars were built for Formula B in 1969 with Ford twin-cams plus one with a FVA for libre. Working through the 1969 FB results, I would speculate that the B15Bs were: 1. Dick Smothers (Hogan Motor Leasing Inc.) from Round 2 onwards 2. Steve Brownstein - from Elkhart Lake in July; identified as a B15B 3. Tom Gelb - from Elkhart Lake in July; quick so probably a B15B 4. Syd Demovsky - from Lime Rock in August; identified as a B15B 5. Jim Grob - from Mosport Park in August; identified as a B15B So the sixth one might be one of these: 6. Peter Broeker - Canada only; said to be a B15B but was it a B9 upgraded? 7. Warren Flickinger - from R2 but this may be an older car or an uprated F3 8. Joe Grimaldi - from Lime Rock in August; not quick but maybe a B15B Also Chevron mounted were Oliver Grant (identified as a B14) and Wayne Kelly. Chris - got any data to add? |

Any data? Quite a lot, though actual chassis numbers are both debatable and included in a forthcoming book, to which I've been allowed a preview. So I'm going to leave those to the author, if he wants to include them pre-publication, and deal in separate entities
Firstly, easy to confuse a B14 and a B15B Gelb's car is described as a B15B. Gelb gave me the chassis number FB-68-8 and said it came from Tom Tufts. This makes it a B14, which is also how Tufts car is described in Chevron records, but with a completely different chassis number! B14s Three built A: Opert to Tom Tufts: Capital Auto & Tire [Lotus 27 in p/x see opert stock list 1.10.68] to Tom Gelb 1969, wrecked late season. Gelb retired from racing and sold rebuilt car in 1970 B: Peter Broeker retained to 1970 and perhaps longer C: Grimaldi Problem car: Dick Smothers has a Chevron in 1968 that in photos looks like a B14, but Opert stock list 21.8.68 says three B14s sold to Tufts, Grimaldi [who appears Lime Rock in August] and Broeker and quotes 6 weeks lead time for new cars, so was the Smothers car a B9B? Warren Flickinger appears in a Chevron in 1969 at a time when Gelb, Broeker and Grant all have B14s, but calling it a B15B is no help either! By 1969 John Kelly was running an ex F3 B9 in FB and I wonder if it's either a B9B of which there are no records, or a coverted F3 B15B [all 1969] A: (Maybe 15B-69-01) Opert then to Doug Brenner 1970 [however, this might be Wisell's Sebring car instead]; 1973 probably with Doug Turner running FC in California; B: Dick Smothers 1969 to Joe Alves f/s CPAW 22.9.70 p.31 4176 Rosario Road, Woodland Hills CA 91364 C: Jim Grob f/s CPAW 21.11.70 p.34 HRE engine but retained 1971. D: Jacques Couture 1969 then unknown E: Hugh Kleinpeter, retained 1970 F: To Steve Matchett but unraced. Probably sold to Steve Brownstein G: Reine Wisell Sebring 1969. Works record says to South Africa, but Doug Brenner says his 1970 car was ex Wisell... H: John Moulds as F3 car, to Bob Howlings in 1970. Problem cars 1969 Steve Brownstein, appears regularly and car retained 1970. f/s CPAW 10.10.70 p.26 roller blue & green 'last year's top Chevron' 69 Prospect Ave Hewlett NY 11557 Syd Demovsky, appears from mid season and retained 1970 1970 cars Skip Walther f.s CPAW 10.10.70 p.26 6313 Mad River Road Dayton OH 45459 Larry Wright (appears only Elkhart Lake so might be hire deal) Jerry Craft For Sale Comp Press & Autoweek 22.8.70 p.26 Opert keeps one car...(Suggesting that the Brenner car might well be Wisell's not 01) Pete Darr (FC/FB) f/s CPAW 14.11.70 p. 25 'works convert to F2; Lotus t/c' Government Camp ORE 'convert to F2' suggests this might be a B15 F3 car, but can't see which 1971 Steven Mandy has a car retained in 1972 1972 Atlantic veteran Bill O'Connor debuts in the formula with a B15B 1973-1974 Doug Turner FC 1974 Dave Yoder SCCA Florida (so probably the Grob or Kleinpeter car) Chris |

Small update to the above
Smothers does not appear until Laguna Seca in October, and I think this might be the first of the B15Bs. Chris |

Interesting stuff Chris. Some thought on your eight possible B15Bs:
A. I can't see Opert running a Chevron at any point during 1969. He had a Brabham before his BT29 arrived and also ran a BT21 FC for Ashplant (which might have been his pre-BT29 Brabham). However, he did have one in 1970 - maybe something taken in part-exchange? B. Smothers. Makes sense. C. Grob. Also makes sense. Smothers and Flickinger also mention HRE engines IIRC. D. I can't see Couture running a Chevron at any point during 1969. E. I can't see Kleinpeter running a Chevron at any point during 1969. Was this in Nationals? F. Sounds plausible. G. Makes sense. H. Interesting! This leaves Demovsky's car unexplained. Like Brownstein's, it was regularly described as a B15B-Vegantune. Allen |

Grob, Couture and Kleinpeter come from build records. Couture car described as red and white. Maybe he was just broker for the car as I agree he has Lotus 59 for all of 1969.
Opert was simply the dealer for the first car; Chevron records suggest direct to Brenner. Just looked again at B14 sales records and timing of appearances: The late 1968 car of Smothers is a B14 according to Chevron list, if so he buys it from Grimaldi in September, and the dates just about fit. The alternative is that Grimaldi [who is ascribed the second B15B in the build records] was already using that car in late 1968 I'd suggest that Brownstein buys Matchett's car whilst Smothers again gets the ex Grimaldi car and sells it to Alves for 1970 Opert runs a B15B in 1970 as a rental car, at this time the following cars are known Smothers' now run by Alves Brownstein Grob Brenner Kleinpeter which rather limits the options as to what it might be. Any clue as to what Jon Hall's and Scott Keith's Chevrons were at 1969 Sebring? Warren Flickinger also has unidentified Chevron at SCCA Finals |

Might this help? I have some information on colours from entry lists:
Seattle (6 July) Flickinger 'Chevron' Yellow/coral Smothers 'Chevron HRE' Blue Sebring (27 Dec) Kleinpeter () 'B15B' Yellow Jon E Hall, Decatur, GA 'B15B' Yellow Demovsky 'B15B' Red/blue Flickinger '' Yellow/coral Brownstein 'B15' Blue Grob 'B15B' Red/white Kelly '' Purple/White Smothers didn't appear at Sebring so his car could have been sold on. Scotty Keith (Dallas, TX) was entered in a Lotus 41C, presumably a leftover from the Hutchison/Krech team. Keith also owned Harold Krech's brand new Tecno and both cars had HRE engines (Hutchison again). Smothers was also a HRE customer. I've dropped Harold an email to see what he remembers of Keith's Chevron. Allen |

I can tell you that I picked up the B15b Chevron that Reine Wisell won Sebring with in 1969. I will scan a picture of both of us talking at Sebring and post it in a day or two. I bought it from Fred Opert. There are pictures of this car on my website in the "Doug's Biography" section www.brennerfab.com.
I am also sure that Smothers car was a B14. It hung out at Frank Monise Motors in Pasadena, California and it got me interested in having a Chevron. I raced one Continental race in 1969 at Castle Rock, Colorado in an ex-Sandy Sheapard Lotus 41. I don't really remember who was there. |

Given the limited number of B15Bs in 69/70 I think it's safe to say that Hall's late 69, early 1970 car has to be Grimaldi's 1969 car because:
Smothers [1969] to Alves 1970 and then sold on mid season Grob retains 1969 car Demovsky retains 1969 car Brownstein retains 1969 car Kleinpeter retains 1969 car Wisell sold to Doug Brenner of the seven cars built for North America this leaves Grimaldi's yellow car which is conveniently missing from Sebring when Hall appears, nor does it show up in 1970 when Hall runs his yellow B15B early season... Harold spoke to Scott Keith about his Chevron at Sebring and Keith is adamant that he didn't race at Sebring.

Okay here's a new hypothesis of B14 and B15Bs
B14 1 [FB.68.8] 1968 Opert to Tom Tufts; 1969 Tom Gelb [who has invoice with FB.68.8 on it] wrecked Mosport, remains back to Opert. Perhaps rebuilt and the Tom Jones B14 in 1972 2 1968 to Peter Broeker, retained 1969 then probably to Bill Eagles 1971 who bought other Broeker cars later 3 1968 to Grimaldi, new at Lime Rock 21 August, perhaps loaned to Smothers late 1968 [or this might be the new B15B delivered early] and used by Carson Baird at ARRC probably Oliver Grant 1969; probably f/s CPAW 21.11.70 p. 35 '1968 Chevron updated to B15 specs HRE engine, 8 races since new] Springdell Racing Corp [Grimaldi's firm] B15B 1 Opert late 1968 for Smothers, used throughout 1969 to Joe Alves 1970 f/s CPAW 22.9.70 p.31 4176 Rosario Road, Woodland Hills CA 91364, 2 Joe Grimaldi 1969 to Jon Hall for Sebring and retained early 1970 run by Opert; perhaps to Skip Walther who was entered by Opert at Elkhart Lake; however Walther car f.s CPAW 21.11.70 'only one race this year'! 3 Jim Grob retained to 1971 4 Maybe Syd Demovsky, retained early 1970 then to Larry Wright or Skip Walther 5 Hugh Kleinpeter, retained 1970 6 Maybe Steve Brownstein, retained 1970 7 Wisell, new at Sebring 1969; Doug Brenner 1970, to Bryon Hatten 1971 then maybe Doug Turner as FC Problem car f/s CPAW 21.11.70 p. 35 '1969 Chevron B15 specs rebuilt Vegantune, 6 races since new] Springdell Racing Corp [Grimaldi] which might be Hall's car coming back in Chris |
