Favorite Group 5 and 6 cars.
My vote for Group 6 is the Matra 670 and 680. Also the Rondeau M379 family.
My favorite Group 5 is the Ford Capri, Lancia Beta Montecarlo, and BMW M1. What are your choices? |

I'm really quite conventional in the Group 5 area, where the Porsche 935 (probably a K3 at that too) wins, simply by virtue of being one of the cars that siezed my childhood imagination.
Group 6 is a lot more tricky. The Matras in retrospect were great retro looking cars, latterly I've developed a real soft spot for the Alfa Romeos (largely driven by watching "The Speed Merchants" and the Kauhsen campaign in 1975) but all in all winning it by a nose is probably the Alpine Renault - looked different, great drivers, and really had to work at winning. And why no 936? Again, a fantastic car and some marvellous stories associated with it, and in isolation would have a decent claim, but to me it just suffers too much by being bookended by the 917 and 956, and equally it doesn't seem right to give the nod in both Group 5 and 6 to a Porsche. |

For sure a question of age.
I loved the Lancia Beta Montecarlo and the Kremer Porsche K3 Favorite Group 6 Cars are the Porsche 936 and the Porsche 908/3 turbo from Joest-Racing. That was the car winning the first 1000km race at the Nuerburgring I had seen in 1980. |

Hello
This is actually more difficult than it looks (well for me anyway ). I was very impressed with the Lancia Beta Montecarlo especially with the red/white works car that I saw win the Brands Hatch 1000kms in 1980. Mind you the blue "Fruit of the Loom" version that I saw in the DRM (Nurburgring and Zolder) looked good as well. The trouble is I always liked the "Mampe" Ford Capri as well which is why I bought the Tamiya version and the Fly slot car. At the end of the day, however, it is easy to nominate the Porsche 935 (especially the K3 or Moby Dick versions) as they are the car I most associate with Group 5. As for Group 6, its the Mirage. Now that was simple! Nick |

I always loved the Capri and also the Lotus Europa someone built for the DRM.
The Montecarlos are my favourite as they came along and beat the all dominant Porsches, but to be honest Group 5 cars still rate as some of the coolest sportscar in my view, simply because they looked kind of like cars driven on the road, but crazily pumped up and powerful! I guess we'll skip on the Aston V8 and the TR7, though Group 6? Well, the Rondeaus and the Lola T600, but they were really prototype Group C cars - The Dome was a favourite of mine. Cheers. |

Well, I'd like to precise that before 1976, the prototypes were Group 5 as Matra 670, Mirage, Ferrari 312P, Alfa-Romeo 33TT12 and Porsche Carrera turbo Martini of 1974.
From 1976, the prototypes became Group 6 (Porsche 936, Alpine-Renault A442, Lola T286 and the new Group 5 was created (Porsche 935...). I set my heart on the 670C, 312P long tail, Gulf GR8, 935 K3, A442 and 936 LM. I liked the Ferrari 512 BB which was usually in IMSA category |

Amen to Lancias!! Is there a decent website chronicling all the group 4 (yes, them too) 5 and 6 cars?
That Lancia ever got a 1.4litre turbo to finish 24hours (12th 1982) is fairly amazing. I bet they made a lovely noise!! |

Mine's the Capri... truely awesome machines that took silhouetting the limit. By the way, if you've GBP100K to spare and want to go one better and own a Group 5 machine, here's a nice BMW 320i that's just gone up on racecarsdirect.com... all the way out in NZ !

I loved the Porsche 935, from the factory originals, to the Joest developed cars, to the Kremer K3's, and then the further developments after, specifically Akin's.
I also loved the MonteCarlos when they came over. Also, the 312 Ferraris were awesome. And I have a soft spot for the Tipo 33 Alfas. Basically, I can't imagine any of them not having been around Oh, and the 320i BMW's run by McLaren/BMW and the Busby car with the add on rear window fairing. robert |

- 935 Porsches, all of them looked awesome!
- BMW M1 Group 5 with the March built aluminium monocoque (with the odd driver seating postion) and twin turbo 24 valve DOHC 6 cylinder engine. The Pro Cars for that matter also looked great but the Group 5 version is just a few steps ahead. - BMW E21 320i turbo, even the Junior team cars looked great despite them not belching the massive flames that the turbo cars produced. - The Group 5 BMW CSL turbo that Peterson, Nilsson & Redman raced, it then became Frank Stella's Art Car - The Zakspeed Ford Capri that raced against the BMWs in DRM, such a low, wide and menacing looking car. |
