New rallycross cars
Just looking at Pat Dorans Fiesta in the June issue of track and race cars mag and its made me think who will be the first to use a S1600 Corsa "clone" with 4wd in it in rallycross.
Along with Eklunds Saab and the Fabia of Larrson it makes a change to the Focus cars that are about now |

Reason is cost i think, running gear in ost of those Focuses can probably be traced back to Escort and maybe even Sierra RS500 days, certainly engines and stuff.
I think the majority of the guys still use the YB Cosworth lump dont they? And transmissions are probly updated and posher verions of stuff that was on old Div 2 cars maybe! |

As chunder says it's just easier and cheaper to go down the Ford route as the engines and transmission is widely available, well proven and cheap (in relative terms).
Also the work needed to make a Focus sized car accept 4 wheel drive has been done many times, putting 4wd into a S1600 shell would take a bit more work (and cost). Having said that you'd have thought that the benefits would make the extra work worthwhile. |

However we have and will have our New Model Polo Out for the end of 2006 there has been no problems with engine developments and bodyshells. I personally hate the nova shape, so when we were rebuilding i was adiment that we should go for a current model corsa or the dave ward version, however stuff from a nova dosnt directly transfere into both. |

S1600 shell
Hello all !
I am new to this forum. You are talking about a Corsa 4WD Turbo? Well in Belgium there is (was) one. Tom Geenen raced it for a few years, he is now building a new Astra. The car was very very fast on the straight but power in corners was a problem, the rear was quicker then the front from time to time... Grtz, |

www.rallysport.se, have a look at the rallycross section for some excellent pictures of Andreas Erikson's new Fiesta Div 1 car, very much like Doran's. Seems from the result he is right on the pace already.

I prefere pats car but i like that spoiler. The white on that dosnt really show the features of that car, unlike pats where the white and red contrast very nicely
As seen here on one of my unreleased desktop backgrounds: http://livewire.servehttp.com/doran1280.jpg |

Well Tom Geenen seems to be ready with a Opel Corsa C 4x4 and he will bring that to our European rounds in August. The reason why Cosworth engines are so populair is that you can buy them in any spec you want up to complete madness. The driveline on most Focus' are not the same a Escort Cosworth drivelines as they are actually very bad. Most use Quaife, X-Trac or Escort WRC. This is very easy because the engines and drivelines are all North/South... It is very expensive to develop your own 500+ bhp / 700+ Nm engine on a 45 mm restrictor and you really need to have a good engine to start with and there are so many things to conquer to reach those levels.
Also Opel Super 1600 shells are very rare this will make them expensive. And for a Ford anything can be bought (from Ford or other) like wings and body panels |

Am surprised that the Lancer hasnt taken off more in Div1 as those of you that read any of the tuning magazines will know that the Mitsy Evo engine can develop serious power.
I guess it is all down to transmission again. I think GTech did the tranny on Oplands didnt they, so you clearly cant use the standard gear and GpA or WRC stuff might be too dear or not strong enough. I know Eklund used to use a lot of Impreza bits oin the Saabs he had, but not sure if he does anymore. I think van Mecehlen gets great results in a car not really designbed for rallycross. Eklound you remember gave up on the flat 4 coz even with a twin turbo set up he couldnt get enough power!! |

@Chunder:
The car from Van Mechelen is realy build for rallycross. The team developed the car over the last few years and he is one of the fastest rallycross drivers in Belgium. The belgian rallycross scene is at a high level. You can take a look at the car/driver at www.vanmechelen-rallyracing.be There is also a Lancer EVO VII doing very well in Belgium. The car is build and driven by Jan Huybs together with his brother Bart. It has 500Bhp (they say on there website) the car is looking great and very fast. You can find it at www.huybs.be (then klik on "Huybs Racing Team" |

Well Eklund could get the power, but couldn't get the reliability. But maybe it could be reliable with the 45 mm restrictor, because there is less power then...

Just to clarify this. Eklund could get plenty of power its just that the subuaru engine couldnt take it. He once went through 3 engines in one weekend.
As far as Opland's car is concerned I only ever saw it relaible once in the ERC in belgium where he won, the rest of the time it was cracking blocks. Both of these engines suffer in comparison to other rallycross division 1 blocks becuase they have relatively thin wall blocks |

The impreza and Lancer that races in Belgium never crack!
If you look at the websites they have 500+ BHP (Impreza) and 500BHP (Lancer). The Mitsu is more a standard car with extra BHP, the engine is on its original place. |
